As the post says....
Thinking about one as a cheap track day toy...know they are lively . Rev 2 model.
Good / bad idea or alternatives (fast / 2 seats / rwd).
If it's just for "fun" a regular 2.0 GT non turbo can be had for less money. Ok it won't be as speedy down the straights, but what trophies or prize money do you get on a track day?Thinking about one as a cheap track day toy...know they are lively . Rev 2 model.

I've owned both an NA '93 and a '94 Turbo. The turbo is in another realm power wise, and speed wise, but in the twisters they are pretty much the same. I loved both, and would have both again. The MR2 championship cars use the NA engine, by the way. Check out WackoJacko and Kovac's thread on his build.
Owned Rev1, 2 and 3 in both turbo and non turbo.
If you can stretch to a rev 3 I'd do that, but the rev 2 is still a good drive.
The turbos, even without fettling will still embarrass a lot of newer performance stuff.
The handling - most of the criticism and 'widow maker' reputation came from the Rev 1's, with the 14" wheels. The Rev 2 onwards have 15" as standard (and if aftermarket, should be staggered fitment) and revised suspension settings. That said, I had no problems in my Rev 1.
IMOC is a wealth of information, and has a good classified section as well.

A badly set up one drives very badly indeed. My factory-standard rev3 NA had comedy rear tyres, worn bushes and dubious alignment. It was fine on the road but was completely unpredictable on the track, eventually spat my mate into the gravel trap after a corner at Knockhill.Once we sorted all that it was awesome, but it cost around £500 to do so (rear tyres were £200 alone...).
A bit long in the tooth now but for cheap thrills they are superb.
I ran a rev 3 GTS for several years with upgrades; new ecu + 2 remaps, new intercooler, electronic boost controller, big exhaust, lighter GTR wheels and bilstein shocks.
It made ~310bhp + and being light - circa 1200kg - it was properly quick in all gears up to about 140.
Downsides, too noisy over long distances, harsh ride and twitchy handling on the limit, though this improved after changes to ride height, shocks and springs.
Still a fun car and good looking too.

Pretty much what I thought guys - sorely tempted.
It's a track prepared one so coil overs, staggered wheels etc - owner describes handling as great in the dry and lethal in the wet, hey owned a few that fit that bill so go in with eyes open.
Like the Mk3 but about 1k more for a decent one and a fair but less grunt.
