After recently spending a day assisting a neighbour change a wheel on her in scotland while the key for her key for her locking wheel nuts was in france

I have come to the conclusion that locking wheel nuts are a useless pain in the arse as it took me ten minutes to get past them once i got the car into my garage.

What are your thoughts on the hideuous things

Unless you have the latest shiniest spangly alloys, which are on a toe rags hit list they are a pain in the butt. My little Mazda has grotty 14" alloys and locking nuts all round, I'm tempted to replace them with normal nuts in case I loose the key.......

......Again!

As to those that carry the key in the car

What is to stop a scrote putting a brick through the window and then nicking your wheels

So where do you keep Your locking wheel nut key then? In the garage? A draw at home?

I've always found them to be a pain. The locking nuts were made of soft ali, so often ended up completely ruined if not very careful. If I had some 500 quid a corner rays or bbs wheels I might re-consider.

Since fitting some relatively expensive wheels on my car I'm wary but my insurance will cover them if stolen.

If some scrotes really want them they will simply drill them out.

Logically at home if your wheels are worth more then a window

Ive removed a few locking wheel nuts, all on my car as well, in my experiance it take 10 minutes to remove all 4, total waste of time.

I have them protecting my standard Honda alloy wheels. The only reason I haven't swapped them for standard is because I cannot be arsed.

What a great idea....

So if/when you get a puncture whilst using the car, how exactly do you remove your nice shiny, safe from thieves because your locking wheel nut key is safely tucked away in a draw at home, alloy wheels then?

But the scrote won't know that- he'll still smash your window looking for it... and probably trash the interior of your car if he's really determined.

Then you are screwed

Keep the key in the car and Scrote smashes window and you have 4 missing wheels and a smashed window

And you'll be buggered when you do get a puncture - so a lose/lose situation really

Can you see the floor in you logic yet?

Yes they are useful and it's really not difficult to keep the key safe in the house. It won't guarantee they never get stolen but its a good deterrent because if you try to get it off without the key you are probably going to make quite a bit of noise.

Working in the trade I can categorically say they are a complete piece of ste. Weak, pointless and an inconvenience. I've removed them from the last 5or6 cars I've owned - no one's nicked my wheels yet

I fkn hate them. My Mk4 Astra first thing when I got it home was refit the pristine 4 wheel bolts in the glovebox in the locking bolts box, and bin the stupid locking bolts.

The only car I have them on are one I converted to from 4 to 5 bolts and the only 19mm bolts I could find were locking one. But even these have a locking cover and a proper hex head bolt underneath, not the stupid spirally pattern or tri-hole rubbish.
