Assuming buy price is the same for both cars and mileage will be 12k. The maths on fuel alone doesn't make much of a difference.

I know for the 10K budget I'll get more car for the petrol, but that doesn't bother me that much. Its the servicing that might clinch it. I know from currently owning a diesel, that the equivalent petrol is slightly cheaper to service. The 600 mile range was nice meaning I only had to fill up once a fortnight rather than once a week.

Which way would you all go? I originally went diesel I was doing about 17k miles a year, now its reduced.

Depends on the model doesn't it?

Volvo C30 - diesel
Audi A3 - diesel
Toyota Auris - hybrid petrol
Audi TT - turbo petrol

etc etc.

On fuel alone, like for like, diesel will use ~30% less, so a 30% saving on your fuel bill.

Depreciation: This is the killer on £10k cars (petrol and diesel).

.
Only if you can buy diesel at the same price as you can buy petrol

Ok diesel is 7% more. So a 23% saving. ~£400/yr saving @ 12k. Not huge I know.

Depreciation remains the most significant IMHO

petrol

sounds better
cleaner burning
fuel pump on the forecourt doesnt feel so scummy
better performance
etc

If you drive like 60 miles a day on the motorway and are happy to sit there at a constant speed every day while listening to the noise of a diesel engine smiling to your self about the realworld negligible saving your making on your annual fuel bill get a diesel

What car, which petrol v which diesel?

A 2.0 TDI A3 will be more pleasant than a 2.0 petrol.

But a 330i would be nicer than both while using more fuel etc etc

For most of the cars I've owned at motorway speeds wind and tyre noise are the most dominating. OK the VX220 was loud, but it was never meant as a motorway car. Have a ride in a E320CDI and your view of motorway diesel cars may change.

I do over 25k miles a year, mainly motorway miles, so I wanted a nice barge.

The market seems to hate petrol barges, so I'm currently purring to work and back in a Jaguar XJ 3.0 V6 petrol smile

Unless you go for a super Eco diesel and do substantially more than 10-12k miles then there will be very little difference in cost against a petrol engine.

If its the non turbo petrol, I would agree. The n/a 2.0 in the a3 is pretty lethargic.

What the cars are will have a great bearing on the answers you receive - what are they?

Knowing what cars you are looking at will help the comparison.

He's looking at 10k motors, the 2.0 was killed off before the years he's looking at.

Are we saying then that the comparison is with the 2.0T petrol? If so, then I'd say it's much, much nicer than the 2.0TDI

This.

And also what will you be using it for? Clattering up and down the motorway day in day out or some country lanes driving?

The engines I would own are 4 cylinder diesel or 6 cylinder petrol. Of course it completely depends on the car whether you have this option though.
