So I finally gave in a bought my wife a new car (Golf Bluemotion) to replace her E46 328i Touring. I just cannot work out what to do with the old one. The offer from the VW dealership was not much at all and I know I can probably get double privately, but I am unsure I can be bothere to try and sell it privately, as even if I put it up for a few hundered more than the dealer offer, I will probably get the "give me your best price brigade".

However part of me is just considering Sorning it and sticking it up in the barn and keeping it around for whenever someone I know may want a very cheap second car or my other one breaks. Trouble is I already have another one in the barn already...

If there was anything wrong with it I would have probably taken the dealers offer but the engine is still very strong even at 140K miles, its got 4 relatively new premium tyres and still looks good when cleaned up. Only issues are a bit of rust on the tailgate which could be repaired and a broken rear parking sensor which I would fix.

I am worried though if I Sorn it, I will end up just leaving it up there for years and occasionally cleaning it...Has anyone else done anything like this before and what was the outcome, i.e. was it a complete waste of time and you ended up selling it for scrap!?

Interesting question! Your description almost sounds like a "for sale" ad...

If it was a forsale add I would add it in the classified ads. We buy anycar offered £600, I would rather give it to a friend for free.

I was interested if anyone had kept a car off road and anything postive came of it. Car insurance seems the biggest hassle. Admiral say I need to take out another multi car policy and many won't honour no claims discounts, just wondering how others have dealt with having a car they may only drive four times a year to keep it ticking over.

Worst 'I have a barn' thread?

Dare I ask what the car in the barn is?

If you SORN the car it won't be immediately ready to go in a few years should someone need it. With items like this i'd just write an honest description and put in on PH or ebay stating you won't reply to silly offers.

I was going to give it to my sister as an early wedding present, but she can't afford to run the Punto shed she drives, and don't want it becoming a burden on her and also would hate it to end up looking like the desert storm target practice car hers looks like smile

VW offered me around £800 wink

Back to my question though, whats the cheapest way of insuring two cars, is it with an Admiral multi car policy or is there a better way? I would only need something like day insurance when I occasionaly use it, but as I understand it, the car has to be insured even if kept off the road, or else it needs to be SORN.

Found out Admiral will let me insure it for £35 a month but couldn't get through to their other sales line to find out how much multi car would be, has anyone else got 2 cars insured with them as the main driver? What was the policy increase? My current policy on a group 17 car is about £250 a month. If it went up to say £350 its a no brainer and I would just keep the car for a while.

At this age/value, what's the worst that can happen if you don't insure it? It's off road and tucked away in a barn, and it's not going to spontaneously combust.

If you don't want the hassle of storage, get it on ebay and get rid. What's the age/condition/mileage of the car?
