Hit a pot hole this evening on my way home, it put a very large hole in the sidewall, wondering if it's worth trying to complain to the council?

1/10, no rant at all, sounds like a Frank Zappa rejected album title.

I tried, after lots of pictures and lengthy letters I waited 3 months and then or told the claim was refused.

Oddly the claim was investigated by a London based insurance company?

Don't tell the council until after you've taken a photo of the pothole (and the damage) - has been known for councils to fill in the hole and then say it never existed!

Councils' Can't be held liable for damage unless they already know of its existence.

Just to make sure go and spray paint a square around it in what ever colour your local council prefer.

You can have a look on this site & if your pothole is on there you know that your council know about it. http://www.fixmystreet.com/

Had something similar happen to me recently. Hit a pot hole that was just after a blind corner coming out of Bath. Stopped at the next petrol station to check my tire and it seemed fine. A minute after joining the M4 my tire blew out in the fast lane and proceeded to overtake me in the middle lane. Local tire specialist confirmed my wheel appeared to have been damaged at the back from a pot hole (slight buckle in wheel + bits of tarmac stuck in it). All tires had about 4mm of tread on them, and i always check my pressures.
I didn't pursue the council for a claim however i contacted them explaining the damage it had done to my car and that the pot hole should be fixed immediately. Received no correspondence and i believe the pot hole is still there. In my opinion trying to get a pay out for a claim would only be a waste of your time.
