I have a very nice leather steering wheel on one of my Rovers. Has a nice smooth appearance and feel to it and to my hands, nice to use.

It is in really good condition but, sun exposure and normal use has worn the paint quite thin in a few small spots. I'd like to return it to its former new condition.

In the distant past, I remember seeing a picture of a leather steering wheel which had been painted by a DIYer and the result looked very good indeed.

So my question: Has anyone any pointers on what is the best 'leather' paint to use, which brand ~ the colour is light tan ~ particularly from anyone who's been there done that and pleased with the result.

TIA.

I've done it with some success a few years back. Before:

After:

I used some 'paint' called Colour Steps, however it was quite old stuff so not sure if it's available any more. Essentially you use some very fine sandpaper to clean up the old leather then paint it on. More recently I refurbished my TVR's interior using a kit from Furniture Clinic which also worked great.

WOW! CarlosV8 ... that's the sort of thing I have in mind. That is a real before/after transformation. Thanks for the pictures.

My wheel is in good condition anyway and some might say then why bother, but if that is the result I get I'll be very happy.

On the 75 and ZT owners club forum there is a guy called Stubie who sells little bottles of the dye, it works well, I had a badly discoloured steering wheel and it brought it back to near new condition, I'm sure he would know what colour you need.

I did my entire interior including the steering wheel about 4 years ago using the kit that furniture clinic sells and it's holding up great, probably done about 70k miles in that time.

You sand off the existing finish, clean up with isopropyl alcohol, then colour coat followed by a clear flexible sealer. I did the seats using an airbrush (had one from making models) but smaller bits like the door handles and wheel worked fine with an artists paint brush.

PS is that a Rover Vitesse dash pictured above? remember the "pod" on top!
