Bizarre what car situation
Discussion
Hi folks,
well last night my old man and i were chatting about his prospective purchase of my Audi TDI with his upcoming retirement and loss of BMW after a no fault smash.
Basically i had planned to buy either a 350z or a golf GTI assuming he was looking at about £5k for the Audi.
However after finding out his pension lump sum is more than he was expecting and he has in the back of his mind that if he had to go into a home etc through ill health (he is only 65 and fine but you never know) the first thing they would come for would be cash assets, so he is sort of keen to be a bit cash happy at the moment.
Rather than give me a bit of a helping hand towards a house deposit, as me and the GF are renting in April for a year to see we dont end up wanting to kill each other
, he suggested he give me more for my car.
£8k was a figure mentioned! i just nodded at this point.
He started telling me a family friend has a 06 plate boxter that he may be looking to sell, and that i could give hime the cash from the audi sale and basically get a boxster for nowt, this is an interesting idea.
Looking at insurance and running costs of basic consumables, its around the same mark as the 350z i had my eye on. However he then came out with the idea of a new polo GTI, as he knew i had looked at them before i bught the audi in 2010.
Looking at finance brokers online i found i could get a brand new Polo gti, for £210 a month (less what i am paying for the audi loan) insurance is half what i pay now, and fuel costs would be similar given the frugal 1.4. Yes PCP is basically a rental agreement but its cheaper motoring than i am paying at the moment, in terms of cash out the door day to day.
so this has opened up a fair choice of what i could look at. The car would be a daily driver, 70 miles a day commute, no kids and no major haulage requirements.
So the choices are:
2006 Boxster (dont know if 2.7 or 3.2 S atm)
2006 350z GT
Brand new Polo GTI
and wild card is a Brand New Toyota GT86 (same idea as polo but about £100 more pm)
Lots of things to look at, polo is cheapest to run, but not a manual, smg only, GT86 is slightly higher payments which may jar after 3 years but its not a stretch to pay or anything.
The 350z is cheap servicing compared to Porsche and more a young mans style (i am 30) and the boxster is Porsche ownership, which i always dreamed off by time i was 30, is a low mileage car, modern shape but servicing and parts would be lot higher, may be top tax band.
This will all be looking to go in April so a month to decide.
Yes its the usual rubbish, but what do the PH bunch feel are pros and cons of each.
Thanks all

Boxster! (spelling rather than what car you should get!)
You'd be doing about 18k miles per year so fuel costs will be a huge factor in the Boxster and 350Z.
Also things like tyres, servicing and all those little htings that need doing on cars that do high miles will be more.
No doubt they both are capable of doing that mileage (my cousin used to commuted from Nottingham to Leeds daily in a Boxster for 3 years) but would you want to?
The GT86 seems to be a good compromise. You can pick up 12 plates for £22k or less with some haggling, maybe look at financing a used one.
There's a PHer (rfoster) who will give you a quote.
The Polo is a decent car but it would be bottomof my list unless I felt I couldn't justify buying the Porsche or Nissan because of the running costs.

Fuel costs will be the big bill, i would be doing circa 15k a year so the audi would be costing me about £175 a month, where as a 30mpg petrol would be about £250 and a 25mpg car would be about £330pm, which is acceptable if in the high end, out where i live in the NE of scotland, a short journey can class as 20 miles.
If i got the Boxster (i did edit the spelling after i noticed i had said boxter...oops) i would only be paying running costs, no monthly repayments, but the running costs would be a lot higher.
350Z again if i got a circa 05/06 plate i could buy it with the Audi cash outright.
I forgot about bfinancing nearly new, i will have a look into that as it opens up another opportunity for nearly new, the good thing about the gt86/brz is they all came with the same spec bar leather and Nav so its basically colour is your main choice.
The Polo is a lovely car, but its smaller, a bit...bland, and although i dont mind the idea of pcp finance, i would rather i was 'renting' something like the gt86 over what is a fancy standard VW.
Edit: i should also add, i have a Honda CB1000R that i would use a lot in the summer to work etc, so that would offset some of the fuel costs too.
Also this is like the last hurrah before a mortgage and kids, so i dont mind paying a bit more in fuel for a few years.

I remember that advert :P
Chips are indeed tasty.
However some helpfull info already guys, fuel costs aside i am more looking at sundry costs, getting an idea about what it costs to run each of these cars real world say over a year.
Porsche servicing would be highest, i dont know if there is a good specialist in Aberdeen?
The Polo would be fixed cost servicing for 3 years as part of deal.
I would be discussing all the costs involved in circa 15k PA costs of mileage with PCP, just get as much info as poss from the dealers etc.
The next difficult bit would be getting test drives as the last time i tried when looking at a seat leon Cupra about 4 years ago, i basically got to sit in it and do about 20mph for 15 mins.
Hopefully VW and Toyota will be more allowing of a decent test drive, i dont mind if its accompanied.

I wandered in off the street and got an hour test drive of a GT86, with no sales person to ruin it.From your list it'd be between the 350Z and GT86 for me. 350Z makes more sense, heavy fuel bill is nothing compared to the GT86e depreciation. But then I know nothing of finance.
In summary: I bought an Elise.
Depreciation is a biggie, and when i looked at a 370z (i prefer the styling of the back end) this was in a couple of years time, but the 370z isnt £8k better than the 350z so took a second look.
However new cars and depreciation go hand in hand, its something you have to accept, only cars that make money are things i cant afford yet

How about something Elise or VX220 like? Some might say a little raw for a daily but I think they'd be ok. The main reason is mpg. On a run they both stand a chance of 40+ with relative ease. Making them viable in running cost terms.
Not a bad idea, although if you're thinking of doing 15k p.a. then you might want to spend a bit of time in one first to make sure you can live with the lack of luxuries.I did look at a 325I e90 as they are lovely cars, few ideas in that regard.
One thing to watch is up here winter can either be a 2 week flurry, or 2 foot of snow for a month and ice for 2 months.
So plan may be to get a £300 corsa etc for winter duties.
VX220 etc is a bit hardcore for a daily punter, and i am building a Locost 7 with a lotus 1558cc engine
will finish it eventually, wiring loom planning atm.
I do like my japanese GT cars, had a prelude 2.2 and integra DC2 type r, so my leaning towards the GT86 is obvious, the issue is what finance offers are realistic, i.e. not being fleeced, and actually seeing if i like the thing.
The boxter would be great but i dont want to cripple myself if it broke, i could afford parts and servicing for the jap cars, but porsche could be expensivo, though i can spanner most mechanical things, electrics and black boxes would be out of my hands.

I'd love to go for a GT86 in your position..
It seems you're not too worried about paying for depreciating assets, and that would be the only thing stopping me, so why not?
Thinking cap says buy that (or another) Boxster, though, £8k puts you in a good market for them and they're a cracking car that obviously won't shed the £10-12k you'll lose in a depreciationg GT86 or Polo. Forget the Polo, while we mention it, in this company it's a slightly irrelevant proposition!
FWIW I wouldn't think for a single second that the Boxster is going to cost you anything like the amount you'd lose on a GT86. Depends on how much you're worried about the money!

The boxster is an interesting one, as the cars age and mileage puts its value at about £12k looking at PH classifieds, however as this is a family friend and he is looking to make cash for his business, may sell at £10k, so it would be a bargain.
It just depends on what feels best, i could hate the thing to drive or sit in for longer than 45 mins etc, or the same for the GT86.
I do feel the plo is the 'beige' card in all this, i remember a magazine review of a golf GTI mk6 where it said it was astonishing at being bland, i.e. good at everything, but bit dull because of it, also im not sold on flappy paddles in a 1.4!
2 litre petrol would get about 30-35 mpg so running costs wouldn't be mad, depreciation i would need to look at, but as someone said above, financing a nearly new car could reap a saving over the brand new driving off the forecourt loss.
However my mum has gone through 3 mini's on PCP and loved them all, and bought the last one on a loan as she retired.

Found out its a 3.2 2005 car.
Mould on seats is a bit mad apparently! So negotiations are going to take into account that it will need a good detail (which I can do) so would get a 'cheap' boxter and return it to its glory.
Or a new GT86 and ignore the depreciation by humming real loud.

I've done just over 42,000 miles in it in 3 years and loved doing it.
