I'm looking to use a smaller than standard front number plate on my TVR Chimaera. I realise there is a standard "legal" size and I crrently have a 7 character registration. Can anyone give any guidance regarding reliable sources of "custom" plates to suit ? In theory I would like to use a max length of 16" x approx 4" width.

If it helps at all I bought my custom smaller number plates from Fancy Plates... their online constructor is easy to use.

Used them many times as has many of my friends.

Good service and quick turnaround.

Fancy plates do a three quarter sized option for the front plate, never had a problem with mine although its a 6 digit affair.

Are you using UK Standard fonts, with just a shorter width plate, given is can accommodate your reg?

What you are talking about are called "show plates" and will be marked accordingly on the back to confirm they are not road legal.

If you look at the websites of people like Craig or Fancy you will see you can choose plate shape and size as well as character size. But you have to be in the "show plates" area of their site.

My plate is smaller than normal, I've admitted it on here before and some like it while others hate it.

Mine is a small bike sized plate trimmed down a bit more by hand. It's not immediately apparent when you look at the car and has passed three MOT tests without comment

If your car doesn't have whole EU Type Approval and it's front plate recess will not accommodate a standard sized plate, then a smaller plate may be fitted provided it is standard UK font.

Or something like that.

My (Aussie) car can only fit a 3/4 sized plate on't front, and it's been through every MOT without question.

I've got a smaller plate on my Lotus. (Which has a very small plinth)

I got it from fancyplates.com

The font is legal, as is the spacing. It has an 11mm border around which is the minimum allowed.

I put a note in the order to fancy plates saying I wanted it to be a small as possible, but still legal and marked as so.

It has BSAU 145d marked in the corner and the place it was made. (The only thing it doesn't have is their postcode, but it would take a very grumpy policeman to give me a ticket for that I imagine!)

So is mine.

But then I'm allowed to do that.

Thanks again phers, as ever great advice & pointers. Ordered 3/4 size plate from Fancy Plates so all sorted. Amazed at, what I thought was an uninspiring subject sparked so much comment & help so quickly ! Only recently lost my PH virginity & can't describe how useful & informative these forums are. Cheers to all !
