My Daughter is a teacher working in Germany and is looking to buy a German registered car. She has seen the above but I can't advise her on it, as I don't know anyone who has ever had one and have no idea what she should be looking out for.

The car it's self is an 1996, showing 125,000km's with a service history (not sure if it's a full one though) and has a new TUV (2 years MOT). From the photo's she sent it looks in a very reasonable condition and the seller wants €1,490ono. I'll try to get her to send me the link tomorrow. I appreciate it's a cheap little car so not to expect to much, but would prefer to know if it will be safe one.

Any advice appreciated....

Here is a link to the advert http://www.autoscout24.de/Details.aspx?id=22746996... May be looking at it this evening so any help on rust areas, gearbox, clutch problems etc would be appreciated.

I recently helped a friend look for her first car and did quite a bit of poking about with these (polos of this vintage).

Nothing really bad to report - just the usual stuff you might find on an old car.

Says in the ad the cambelt was done at 95,000KM, but I'd want to know when that was (was it 14 years ago? smile)

It's a 17 year old car, so I'd be looking for any signs of rot. Can happen anywhere, but have a look under the felt in the boot as well as the usual sills etc.

It's just like any other mass produced car. Drive it, listen for any weird noises. Look around it.

At the end of the day it's not a huge sum of money and it will be worth something to sell on. If she isn't happy inspecting it, then it's advisable to find a friend who can or pay someone to check it over.
