Kinda settled on going to look at a couple of these for sale hopefully this week. So would like to hear from anyone that owns/owned one and can chip in with what to look for specific to this car problems wise and running cost wise.
Thanks

Buy a civic type r/focus st/megane 225 instead. All infinitely better than the terrible pergeot.

I had a 2000 138bhp GTI and was a nightmare. Lots and lots of electrical gremlins, and in 2 years never ran properly. Ended up part-exing in against a Honda Jazz for my mum.

Save money, buy a 306 GTI, blitz other 206s down the lanes.

Don't.

Buy anything else, it will be better.

The only sane advice is "don't", unless you specifically looking for poor reliability, stodgy handling and mediocre performance.

If you want a fun French hatch get a Clio 172/182. They have superb performance and handling, and....well 2 out of 3 isn't bad smile

I loved mine... but it was terrible, won't go there again.

As mentioned, lots of problems, including the old 'cuts-out-whenever-it-damn-well-feels-like-it' one. Annoyed me too much in the end, part-ex'd for a Clio 182, much better!

One of my friends has one. There are a few things I actually like about it; the seats are comfy, engine noise is quite nice and handling is good. But dash is very plastically and feels quite cheap. He has had a few electrical problems with it; mainly to do with the door locks not working correctly.

Would I personally buy one? No

Blimey, that bad ? Not expecting perfection or it to be the best hot hatch ever, but for £1500 ish, an 04 plate with 80-100K miles and 174 bhp for the money can't be that bad.
I don't really want to spend more than that, so limited as such.

Lol, I knew what the answers would be before I even looked in the thread.

OP, can I ask why out of all the decent hot hatchbacks released over the last decade, you've plumped for one of possibly the worst? Genuine question as I'm curious about your reasons for picking this particular car?

I think they run on bulbs - they seem to go through them at a rate of knots, anyway!

When mine was running well i actually enjoyed it. Apart from a 205 Rallye it was the only other fastish car I had owned. I brought mine before the value bottomed out.

They are cheap now, very cheap and you do get alot of car for your money, but like others have said there are better cars out there, and the 206 was never well made and suffered alot of problems.

Aunt of mine had a 206 and it was perfectly reliable and gave no problems what so ever. Brother bought a Honda Civic Type R from new and that was less reliable, and his Saxo VTS popped a head gasket twice and had lots of problems with the catalyst.

I have an old E36 BMW wich is a Touring , which I no longer need and is getting a bit tatty, so want a daily slag that's fun to drive, costs around £1500 and is a hot hatch.
The 206 is just the right size and looks a lot better than a Clio or a Focus ST, a Megane 225 is twice the price. Basically, seemed an OK car that's a decent amount of power and for £1500 for an 03 or 04 plate, not too old and should be clean/rust free as such.
The 306 GTI 6 may be the better car, but I want as new as possible, still a hot hatch and a decent bit of grunt. For me and my needs, I'll trade a bit of driving dynamics for having a newer car. 03 or 04 is about as old as I wish to go.

I loved mine, never had any problems and I'm by no means a driving god but I thought it cornered pretty damn well. Found it a bit juicy round town but overall thought it was fast and generally quite a nice place to be.

My girlfriend has a much older 206 and it runs fine. All cars at this point hve their issues but if you find one that's in good order I'm sure you'll enjoy it no end.

I do like the interiors on them it must be said, especially the seats... beats the Renaultsport. For everything else though, a Clio 1*2 is the way forward really. My Clio 182 only set me back £1,850 and that was over a year ago now so the deals are there if you look around!

Gotta be a Clio 172 at that price if you want a fun car that ticks all of your boxes

Fair enough, I guess for £1500 it makes sense as the "better" options cost a bit more. I'd still be wary, they really do have a reputation for being unreliable and crap to drive so go in with your eyes open.

I had a '2000' 206 Gti for a couple of years and never had any problems except for a dodgy brake pedal switch, quite common on 206's and was easily sorted by the dealer under warranty. It results in the rear brake lights being on constantly. I think it hovered around 30/32 mpg.

Sold it to a friend which I would not have done if I thought it would have something ready to go bang.

This was mine, 2000 V, Moonstone with SP pack (arches, mesh grill, spoiler and fuel cap cover). The original owner had the bumper inserts colour coded too before deliery. I think the Gti 180 bumper inserts were already colour coded.

The Clio 172 was the rival for mine at the time but I preferred the styling of the 206
