Well it's renewal time and my renewal quote from Admiral is £995, plus another £150 for my optional extras. Pretty good quote if i'm honest.

But I got a set of quotes on confused, and Flux came up the cheapest at £1046.

I thought, I bet i can knock that down a bit if I call them up.

Oh no.

After sitting on the phone for 20 mins clarifying all of my details, which were all correct with what they had on file, they came back on the line and tell me the online quote is in actual fact no longer and invalid, and due to some incorrectly put data, the actual besr quote they can offer me is £3000.

I then pressed them to tell me what exactly they had done incorrectly. They hesitated and finally told me that they'd entered the 'purchase date' of my vehicle wrongly.

This somehow added almost £2000 to my quote.

tts. I probably wouldn't have gone with them anyway, as I'm going to look into classic insurance, and i've already heard bad things about them on here. But this experience, surely shows just what a joke they are?

And they're supposed to cater to enthusiasts who care about their motors...

Now, does anybody have a recommendation for classic insurance?

Surely it was you that entered the wrong data online in the first place, hence the low online quote.

What would have happened if you had just purchased it online? Assuming the quotation still comes up at £1046 when going through confused.com.

I changed my car part the way through my policy. They put my excess up from £150 to £400 compulsory!! I changed from an Alfa 156 to a Giulietta, not exactly a Ferrari is it!

When I challenged this they said it was the best they could do, I tried to cancel it but they made that prohibitive as well. I will let my policy run and then I will renew elsewhere. I don't care if they end up being the cheapest next time, I will never give them my business again on principal!

i used them about 8 years ago for 3 years, and had my car written of by another car. they were very good and wouldn't hesitate to use them again if they were in the price bracket.

i have had a lot more worse car insurance experiences than an incorrect quote.

Trying to figure out where the problem lies in this one.

OP goes on confused.com gets cheap quote
OP then calls quote provider to 'knock down' cheap quote more
Backfires and quote provider increases quote
OP doesn't go back on confused.com to buy the cover that was initially offered.

Hmm..

As with so many things, you only get to find out how good they are when something goes wrong. Anyone else had the 'pleasure' of going through their claims procedure? It's not good. If you have any hair/sanity left and/or no desire to punch kittens out of sheer frustration then you've done infeasibly well.

Nothing changed between the online quote and the phone call.

The policy was only 2 months old, however if I choose to cancel it because of their ridiculous excess they were only going to give effectively the value of 5 months back!

Why they feel a need to be so unreasonable i have no idea. I was once with admiral and was 5 months into a policy when changing cars, they gave back around 6 months worth which was pretty considerate!

I did in 1989, does not sound like it has improved much in the intervening years.

Op, the same happened to me, but with 'Flux direct', who I was assured by the lady on the phone was a completely different company (I'm not so sure).

Anyway, I distinctly remember putting the correct purchase date in when using the comparison sites. They got it wrong though, and when I did the decent thing and pointed it out, they charged me an extra £100 for my trouble.

They did something similar to me.

I phoned up for a quote. I gave them full details of the car, including the fact that it's an import. They gave me a price. I agreed.

Then the paperwork turned up with it described as a UK car.

On the next phone call, I was told that it being an import would add £60 to the policy. This put them about £20 or so higher than REIS, who'd I'd discounted only on cost - a mistake as REIS were impressive on the phone (the car is modified).

But, I was driving the car by that time and did not want any more hassle, so they got me for the next twelve months...

Then the 'corrected' paperwork turned up. It now stated that it was an Eunos and not an MX5, but that it was still a UK car.

The next phone call resulted in the promise of an email or letter confirming that I was, in fact, insured on an import policy despite what the certificate may say. I asked for a letter.

The fabled letter never turned up.

Let's hope I don't crash in the few months remaining. Any claim will no doubt have to involve the ombudsman if they attempt to wriggle out of covering me.

TL;DR - there's not a hope in hell that I'll ever renew with these muppets... And I haven't even had to make a claim to discover this.

Flux direct insured my rx7 last year, basic mods and cheapest by far!.

Having a mare at the moment as I've changed to a 99 rx7 and due to a over zealous met officer I'm the owner of a MS60.

Told them that the new rx7 was not modified and the guy on the phone said that they couldn't insure me as it was not modified!.

Gotta hand it to the guy, Chris iirc he has been good as gold. So this evening spent a few hours popping on some coilovers and a few basic breathing mods to get the ball rolling.

Will report back in tomorrow smile

Unless their commission was massive ("return premiums will be refunded to you net of commission...blah blah...could be up to 30%") it's not the broker but the actual underwriters who decide what you get back. Not that that helps, the net result to you is the same, but your ire is perhaps aimed in the wrong direction.
