Best car for a 17 year old, insurance wise
Discussion
That's probably about the best car to insure. Not really desirable enough to be sought after by theives. Not big engine and power, pretty good safety, reputable make.
Or something like a Fiat Punto, or Ford ka, or Vauxhall Corsa, typical low power first cars. Just don't slap 10 tonne of plastic on it and twin exhausts, making it into the Chav catagory and either having to lie on insurance or pay extra for the nickability factor (although god knows why personally speaking).
All that crap just makes the car slower and usually handle worse as they have no power to make any difference...only make it jump around on the road and ride like crap.

Small engines don't always mean cheap insurance. The more family orientated cars can be cheaper. The best bet is to make a list of cars and do one insurance quote and keep changing the car that will then give you an idea of insurance prices. The other thing to try is adding older relatives as named drivers on the insurance I managed to get about £350 knocked off by adding my parents (who may at some point need to drive my car).
When I was 18 I had a 1400cc petrol and that was £1200 per year I changed that when I was 19 to a 1300cc diesel (insurance group 3) and that was £1200 for the first year.

Apparently, or so i've heard the price can also be determind by how many of that car have crashed, so more crashes higher premium... so a fiesta for example would be more than a panda just because more fiestas are sold so statisically more will have crashed. But that could be absolute bull...

It will be a weighted mean. i.e 1 in 10 Fiestas or 2 in 10 Pandas etc. Otherwise rare cars would be cheap as chips to insure.Try looking at insuring a 1.0-1.2 k12 micra, good cars but no young people want them. I pay £600 per year atm although i have been driving for 3 years. I save around £100 when compared to driving a corsa/fiesta/saxo, and i get a comfier, marginally more powerful, slightly bigger car. The downside is it looks like a hippo

Classic beetle. Cheap to run, cheap to insure. It'll require some maintenance too, so will force him into learning how to look after a car!

No chance. Beetles are extremely high insurance due to the "dub-scene" and every inexperienced new driver wanting to let one go rusty and lower it.

I wouldn't want my 17 year old son bouncing around in a car that has 0 safety features. You can crash them at 30 and quite easily die.Clio 98-05 plate, 1.2. Well that's what I have, found that pretty much all VW's were more to insure, but it varies massively on postcode.
I used Admiral for my first year, though Bell and Elephant are the same company so try them too.
It was a pretty expensive first year, but just get that first year's no claims and it'll probably half next year.
