Some driving still amazes me..
Discussion
Im sure this has been covered numerous times but I just had to get this off my chest!
My journey consists of a mix of B-road 30-40 and A-road national speed limits.
So yes, most people drive sensibly through towns and villages because its 30 for a reason!!!
Anyway, driving to work this morning and some muppet in a golf decided to drive up my arse, obviously wanted to speed through the villages. Once on the single 60mph carriageway he carried on driving up my arse, even though there was a stream of cars in front - so i couldnt go faster if i wanted to.
So, approaching another village, he decides to overtake me, despite a car oncoming - now I leave a gap to prevent the stone chips from damaging my car as much as poss, but then why overtake when so much traffic and no where to go, its not as if i was dawdling!
Anyway his unsafe overtaking which would have resulted in a head on if I hadnt eased off (i drive a 911 so i have enough power to stop him). Obviously red mist, and abuse followed, but soon gained my composure and followed him all the way to round the corner from where i work - a further 10 miles. So, it didnt achieve anything but it could have cost someone their life.
I wish i could do something, but i cant. I was going to have a word with him and ask him why he drives like a muppet, but presume he is the type of person with no consideration or conscience, so pointless.
Im sure there are times when other people take offence to my driving - as im not perfect, but im certainly not life threatening to others.

If true however, the guy is a bellend, and life is just a little too short to worry about idiots like him.

Why would you want to stop him overtaking by using your car's extra power? Regardless of whatever judgement you're making on his driving, that's insane
This, plus there is nothing wrong in overtaking in a stream of traffic, especially if you know the road and the opportunities to overtake further along it.
The only part of his overtake that a change in attitude from you couldnt have helped with was the fact he overtook in a 30 zone which for me is a no no.
1) It seems you leave a gap from the car in front purely to stop stone chips. I can imagine that in a 30 mph limit your head would be telling you that you dont need a very big gap. Which would mean you were tight up to the car in front. That means that the overtaking car would have to brake and match your speed and match the size of the gap before pulling back in.
2)To even consider using your "power to stop him" is a big no no. Ive had this done to me. You leave a car stranded on the other side of the road when there is an oncoming car? Great, im sure that does wonders for road safety.
But it didnt cost anyone their life, and thats despite the fact he had to overtake you and fit into your short stopping distance.
And why would red mist and a loss of composure be "obvious"?

Firstly, agree with OP, standard of driving is diminishing in this country at an alarming rate, and Golf man sounds like a lot of people round the Leeds/Bradford area who I would like to End as soon as possible, but due to murder laws I can not.
Second, Not sure if anyone can give a definitive on this but, with all the in car "accident" cameras that people are starting to install (and living in Bradford, the fake/staged accident capitol, i am very seriously considering), If one were to take footage of dangerous driving to the BiB, would they be able to use this as a mean of prosecution?
I know it sounds a bit Big Brotherish, but there are a number of people who i share a common commuting time with (one fecker in a Scoob in particular) who i think i could probably get banned with a few weeks footage, this would bring me great pleasure, and increase my calm no end.

Re: 2 - I had to ease off to let him in, so he forced his way into a gap. And i would never leave anyone stranded which was also my point, i was forced into easing off recognising the oncoming car ahead, which i presumed the driver of the overtaking car should have recognised themself as it wasnt a blind overtake.1) It seems you leave a gap from the car in front purely to stop stone chips. My comment re: the power, i can see how this can be taken out of context, but be assured that was never my intention in such a situation.

I've wondered this. Clearly in the event of a big accident where people get hurt they'll use whatever evidence they can get their hands on to decide what happened. But do they care enough about the rubbish driving that gets recorded, to make it worth sending in?
For instance I considered sending this in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kffXe445bzM
Then thought nah Le Plod probably have better things to do than investigate a non-accident, and where would I send it anyway.

I drive a lot on roads like the OP described and he mentioned the thing that bugs me - very few people overtake on these roads so if someone does, you tend to get showered in stones from the centre of the road, and it's worse if they overtake somewhere they're not supposed to, ie through a turn-right hatched area.I suppose depending on how I feel, if someone really is right up my arse then I'll pull over and let them past, although they then tend to drive cautiously as I guess they're nervous the car could be unmarked Bib (unlikely in the OPs case though).

I see what you are saying, and yes that is appalling driving an clearly the 206 driver has no lane discipline at all...but i don't think any of it was maliciousness just poor wheelmanship. But do they care enough about the rubbish driving that gets recorded, to make it worth sending in?

I don't have footage (did you take that on your phone btw?) but there are a few places on my way to work where the right hand lane becomes a feeder for a right turn, and as such if you want to continue straight you have to merge in with the traffic in the left lane which at rush hour times IS busy vs the empty right hand lane.
There are 2 place in particular where it is obvious that someone is coming belting up the right hand lane at well over the speed limit with the intention of cutting in...now, fair play if said driver does not realize about the required merge and calmly slows indicates and waits to be let in, therefore causing no danger....but mr scoob must have flown into a non-gap coming to a very abrupt halt on at least 10 occasions, a number of which have been directly in front of me, once nearly hitting me. This is in a fairly residential area almost directly in front of a nursery and not far from a school, so there are kids and mothers with pushchairs all over the place.
That is dangerous, deliberate and deserves a ban in my opinion. If he did it in front of a copper i am sure they would stop him.

Yes. Android phone running this app: http://www.dailyroads.com/voyager.phpThe one time I needed it I didn't bother to put the phone in the cradle. Doh! Now I'm quite anal about it.
Looking at it from the other point of view if there are say four cars behind one slower moving car (usually seems to be a Yaris doing 35mph in a 60 and slowing down for bends) and none of those four cars make any sign that they are going to overtake the Yaris at the obvious overtaking points (I normally allow for two or three overtaking places before looking to take matters into my own hands) I will look to see if I can overtake and cut in as I can't safely overtake all five cars in one go on the average B road.
What I won't do is try and cut in when there clearly isn't a gap as all four are driving too closely to allow for a suitable gap to cut in, forcing your way in can be very dangerous as you are reliant on the driver in question backing off, far too many people these days have the red mist descend and decide to block you out. Its also not very polite or safe to force somebody to back off when they are maintaining a steady speed, the gap needs to be big enough for your car to fit in and not cause the following car to brake to maintain a safe distance to your rear bumper.
Speeding up when somebody overtakes you is pretty pathetic outside of a race track. Are you really that bothered that somebody has dared overtake your car that you must best them with a pointless and dangerous show of whose got the bigger balls?

My phone sits in a cradle on the dash so doesn't see out the front window unfortunately. The one time I needed it I didn't bother to put the phone in the cradle. Doh! Now I'm quite anal about it.
I may be buying my own car in the next month or so (and not driving a company motor which i dont really care about) i am tempted to get one of those interior roof mounted 360 degree cameras.

Ahhh. The power of assumption. It's possible the guy has been using that logon name on different forums since 1995, and the number relates to his shirt number on a sports team.
Or maybe his birthday is 9/7 1975.
Last time I saw this done the guy made himself look quite an idiot ranting about kids coming onto thier forum.

Also i'm only 20 (for a week at least) so i'm in no position to complain about 'kids' on a forum. Custard is tasty so lets move on.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
