Puncture repairs

Had a puncture last night, and annoyingly it's only an inch or so from the sidewall which local tyre place reckons is too close to patch. It's a nice neat hole (looks a roofing nail or similar as you can see the depression from the head), and they tyres still got loads of tread on it. What is the general view on Ultraseal and the like these days? It's a winter tyre on a diesel Octavia so not getting subjected to a particularly hard life.
