So I was washing my car today and as I was drying it I came to realise mg must have been short on some paint when they did mine as the paint is either thin or non existent underside of the bonnet and boot or its lacking clear coat on anything not seen when everything is closed.

It got me thinking, any manufacturers have worse paint work from factory?

I heard that the Astra VXR was prone to having a single half-millimetre paint blob that was hardly visible to the naked eye somewhere obscure on its bodywork.

Lotus seem to make their paint out of soft cheese.

my mum had a ford puma.

paint was very thin and the bodywork rusted causing the paint to bubble badly on quite a few places. it was a 2001 car and by 2007 the arches and A-pillars had touch up paint on- by 2008 they got rid of it before the arches went completely. it was a shame because it was a nice car otherwise.

Sadly, that's just how it is on newer cars.I paint cars for a living, and the worst
imo are the manufacturers from Korea.
Bad finish and very little clearcoat

I'd certainly consider rejecting a car for that.

Only after 113 hours of paint correction and getting two of my mate's over to try and photograph the blemish though.

Is this down to legislation on what the paint is actually made of these days?

Birdpoo seems an absolute killer on modern cars (say cars built in the last 6 - 8 years). The toughest paint on my car is the bit that was repaired after someone pranged it.

In my experience of car ownership, BMW have the worst finish.

I think 80's/90's VAG cars in "Tornado Red" always seem to suffer very badly with fading and turning pink.

I have seen new BMW's look like they had paint applied by a gritty roller.

I'm pretty unimpressed with the OH's Golf (58 plate), seems to scratch as the wind goes past it looks horrid and she really looks after it in terms of avoiding scratches! frown

Volvo on the other hand had about an inch of paint and took being sideswiped by a saab in its stride, plenty there to t-cut and buff out! smile

That's not poor paint from the factory, that's paint that's been poorly looked after. The fact you can strip off a layer and it looks as good as new is testament to the quality if the factory paint job.
