Hi, sorry if this topic has been done to death but I can't search on my phone.

I would just like to hear your thoughts and experiences using BP ultimate diesel. I know it's supposed to be better for your engine and give better mpg but is it effective? I have a 9 year old 2.0 TDCI mondeo and even on its first tank full it seem to be having a positive effect, the engine just seems healthier although it could be a placebo effect.

So yeah your thoughts and opinions please.

Also how does it stack up to shell VPD?

If there are any good threads already then a link would be super.

I know pistonheads is pretty anti-diesel but surely someone has an opinion or would like to share their experiences?

My TDCI liked it too. However I didn't like the car enough to pay the extra!

I've been using Shell V-Power diesel in my 2007 Focus (2.0 Peugeot DW10 engine, so should be the same as you) since it was new. There's definitely a difference in response and general performance on V-Power versus standard fuel.

So has anyone gotten better fuel consumption using these performance fuels? And has anyone compared the BP stuff with shell VPD?

My old 330d ran better on ultimate, smoother and less noise. Didn't make a massive difference on consumption, maybe 2/3mpg more.

Seems to be very car dependant though, know a few who swear by it. On the other hand I know a few cars it made no difference to, all newer ones for some reason

I tried out all the different diesel variants from Shell and BP for my Citroen ZX. Its an old school 1.9 turbodiesel (XUD9) and I've heard a lot of comments that performance diesel doesn't have much of an effect with old school diesel engines like the one in my daily but I did notice a considerable increase in performance with the Shell VP diesel. The engine revs much more willingly to redline and it pulls harder at the top too. With the fuelsave diesel, it feels much more sluggish to rev and there is nothing at the top so even if you are WOT you end up changing up a good 500 rpm short of the red line.

The BP Ultimate didn't have a huge effect though. Both performance fuels gave on average 5-7 mpg less than the cheaper regular diesel.

It made quite a difference on my little 8V Rover L Series performance wise, and though it took a couple of tanks the economy was better once it'd all washed through by around 4-5mpg

Gives me 2-3mpg more so pays for itself. Engine is smoother and smokes less when booting it.

I put ultimate unleaded in my st220 and it ran like a bag of st.

Im tempted by some diesel v-power or similar to see if i can give me 320's mpg a kick up the arse.

I'll brim the tank next week and report back on mpg's smile

Had the engine management light come on on my 3.0 S Type Jag. First thing the garage man said was had I been using Tesco petrol? Told him yes. He reset the the ECU computer but said it'd probably come back on. And it did about 50 miles later. Told me to run three tank fulls of Shell V Power though the car, bring it back and he'd reset it again and it'd probably be OK. Done that ands so far it's not come on again. Make what you will of that but he told me supermarket petrol has a lot of silicon (??) I think, in it and gums up the Lambda sensor.

I see we've migrated from diesel to petrol (again)...does nobody bother to read the OP?

Nice to see positive thoughts about the fuels, think I'm going to keep using them but may swap to shell as I've read elsewhere that its the better of the 2. Something to do with BP's fuel being regular derv with additives and shell's being fully synthetic.

Ran V power & Ultimate Diesel when I had the Jags. They ran better, smoother & quieter but absolutely no performance or consumption difference. On my wife's Toyota D4D I filled it up with Ultimate out of habit one day when she wasn't there & didn't mention it to her. I had a call the next day asking why it was so much faster!

I've tried them all in my 760i V12 and Esso premium unleaded gets me 10% better mpg and what seems like better breathing.

This is pistonheads don'tcha know.

To be fair, its interesting to here about the difference between the petrol versions and should hold some relevance to the thread despite not being a direct comparison.

Fuel has to meet minimum standards. Your car is designed to run on the minimum standard fuel. It all comes from the same refinery.

If you really think it makes any difference, then get you car on a dyno, measure the fuel in and the work out for the cheap stuff and the posh stuff, then get back to me.

My engine light came on my 2.0 TDI. I put 200miles worth of VPD and then the engine light dissappeared, but all was not what it seemed.

I was then tempted to post about the miraculous benefits of the fuel, but then decided to just have a look on the ecu via vagcom. The logged error code was actually an intermittent AFM reading out of limits, which obviously was completely unrelated to fuel.

I wonder if the only way to tell the fuel apart is to get someone else to blindfold you while they fill up your car, and then see what the difference is truely like on the road.biggrin

The derv barge runs off anything I can squeeze into the tank and so I dont see how paying more will help. That said Ive not tried it. Not sure what benefits there would be when 20% of the tank is veg oil though!!

The bike however with its small, tuned engine, only gets V power or tesco ultimate if possible. Certainly more mpg and better performance when wanted over regular jungle juice.
