Im considering downgrading from the evoque to free up some cash. I am considering some kind of smallish estate car to replacement. I think i might be crackers or getting old and boring but does anyone have any ideas or deals that i might be interested in.

My main ideas have been a octavia vrs or a focus estate in titanium x guise. The vrs blackline looked a good prospect, could be had for about 18k howver apparently none in stock now! These might just about be in budjet with discounts or via brokers.

So my critieria-

New or very nearly new (not a 6 year old 335d estate)
Estate (for the dog)
40 mpg min in day to day use
A nice good quality interior
Not dull as ditchwater to drive.
A decent amount of luxury (leather would be nice)
Max budget 18k with any discounts that might be on offer
Not interested in finance/pcp but straight purchase.

If you want something rather efined and comfortable, how about a Volvo V50/V60 depending on size?

If not the seat Exeo is just an (old) A4 in drag and should be comfortable and cheaper.

Buying new, I don't hold much hope for your residuals on any option though

I have had a look at those options new/nearly new all are a good bit more than 18k

Very true, hadn't realised the amount they had crept up over the past few years....

Other than that how about a Hyundai i40 tourer, in the flesh they look rather good and Broadspeed has them listed as starting from £15k new.

My FIL bought a year old VRS estate last year and he really likes it.

I had a go in it and liked the styling, finish, build quality, interior,(DSG) box, steering and brakes.

Are you looking at a diesel one? (you don't specify diesel or petrol).

If so it's quiet for a four pot (inside at any rate) and reasonably brisk overall. I think I could get it to 4500 rpm or thereabouts so relatively broad spread of power.

As the owner of a V60 I can say it's really not that big in the back and has a very shallow boot floor. The dog is a Chocolate Labrador and even he is short of head space on the rare occasions I let him in the boot.

Bear in mind the new shape Octavia is imminent, which is bound to affect the current model

Ypu a diesel one, they were doing a limited run out of 500 with leather and nav/ I was told a deal could be done for close to 18k but when the dealer checked theres none of the buggers left.

With skodas vat free offer nearly new ones seem to be more expensive than brand new at the min. Fro example

I had exactly the same criteria as you and it was between a old high mile 320d msport or a VX line insignia 2.0tdi

This won

Can't reccomend it enough, great mpg, all the toys (and I mean everything), comfy and all for £13,000

tongue outsmash Ungrateful sod!!

Also the s4 will be pretty much dirt cheap to run (other than fuel)

Also both the S4 and Bmw (diesel +- 50mpg etc) I presented are nearly new at only 1-2 yrs old with less than 40k miles on the clock.
