Looking at medium sized vans now and like the T5 but god they are expensive.
Are they much better than everything else including the vito?

T5's are no better than anything else out there, but command a £5k premium due to the VW "Scene Tax". Don't expect good build quality & reliability.

The main problem with Mercs has always been rust, although I understand the newer ones are a little better. Best vans are Hiace's in my opinion, although they're not very stylish. Hyundai i800's are pretty well thought of too. Avoid Trafics & Vivaro's like the plague!

If we're talking about the original shape Vito here then AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE! Absolutely terrible build quality and rust proofing, will only cost more and more money to keep on the road

I currently run a 2006 T5 that i have had since new.Done over 110,000 now with 100% reliability.Only downside to mine is lacks power as it is only the basic 85ps model.Otherwise i would say it is faultless.

I brough an ex demo new shape T5 last Jan. Its done 42K now and had no real problems apart from dodgy seal on the front calliper which was replaced along with a new set of pads and fluid change under warranty. I can't fault the service I have had from VW. When I come to upgrade I will have a set of windows put in and it well be worth not far off what I have paid. They hold there value so well.

Looking at the newer shape Vito. I know about rust issues. Looks like the T5s have an up and down rep

The mk2 Vito is RWD which might be a plus for you.

Mercedes are desperately trying to make the Vito 'cool' by sponsoring sportspeople such as bicycle riders and surfers.

The company have had T5's for several years and each and every one has had a lot of problems.

I can't comment on the mercs but I would avoid anything with a VW badge on it, unless you enjoy big bills and lots of courtesy vans on a regular basis.

As you say, the old Vitos were terrible. We've been considering them at work though and after research they seem quite good. I think we'll probably end up with Vauxhall Vivaros though (again), for cost reasons.
