Hi. Since owning my car i've noticed when going over a bit of road that is bumpy and I put on the brakes, they don't seem to respond hardly at all, and then I get a grinding noise and don't stop properly. Is this a common thing with all cars with ABS? Could someone explain? Thanks!

Shot - or at least, worn-ish - dampers? wink

sounds like something in the brakes - Caliper/drum, pad or disc related...

stupidly simple but have you checked the pad thickness? grinding noise is certainly what you get when you have worn the pads down to the rivets (not my car) hehe

Uneducated guess - Your suspension is shagged, or you're going too fast. Wheels are rebounding and momentarily losing contact with the road surface. Grip is reduced and sensitive ABS kicks in?

Could be pads retracting due to exessive play in wheel bearing?.

This ..... new vauxhalls certainly used to do it on test drives on a particularly bumpy road when braking for a T junction, the ABS syatems on older cars used to make a grinding noise as it was doing its thing.
