A colleague has a Bentley Continental V8. I've noticed that only the outer holes of both figure 8 exhausts get any carbon deposits.

Is this another factory fitted con along the lines of the M5 virtualised engine noise?

I think you'll find many exhaust designs on factory cars are cons. The Honda Civic's for example are still round, only with triangular shaped holes in the bumper for them to hide in.

But does it really matter?

yes Almost all modern cars which make a feature out of their exhausts are designed primarily for show.

This is a pet hate of mine for the California - I think the exhaust tips look awful (they aren't connected to the actual exhuast system as far as I can tell, just attached to the bumper and roughly lined up with the actual exhaust which is an inch or so behind.

I'm pretty sure when I looked closely at a 458 they have a similar set up, but its a lot less obvious IMO than on the Cali.

(I stand to be correct on my understanding of the exhausts for those cars, I could be wrong)

I hate the thing Peugeot did a few years ago which was a down turned exhaust pipe (on the diesel models) with a fake tip to make it look better. No, you French retards you've just somehow made it look stter.

I remember that. You could just see a nasty black pipe through a gaping chrome hole, or plastic backing. I imagine it fooled most people into thinking they were looking at something sporty, though.

I think the thread has covered the issue with exhaust trims being attached to the bumper and not really being the end of the exhaust pipe.

But the reason some of them get carbon on them and some don't is that not all the exhuast pipes are open all the time. There are often silencer bypass pipes which can be opened by valves when not doing a drive-by noise test (there are other reasons, but that's what it comes down to).

Even cheapo stuff like MGFs have exhaust valves, which is why you sometimes seem them with one sooty exhuast*.

So it's not a factory fitted con for the customer, it's a factory fitted flipping off of the noise regulations. Because EU.

I have to admit I hate automotive 'fakery'. Fake exhausts, fake vents etc just highlight 'show but now substance' approach.

The only concession I'll make is the TVR Sagaris filled-in 'wing vents', since they were intended to work originally.. I'll let that one slide. smile

Ford did it too with the Mondeo ST TDCI or whatever it's called.

I too hate automotive fakery, whether it's an MR2 with a 360 bodykit, a 318 with an M3 badge, or just a fake vent.

I even have a slight problem with car model numbers implying larger engines than are actually fitted.

If the Conti's other exhaust holes have real function my OCD will be greatly alleviated and Bentley respect restored.

It's just a bit of modern trend styling. I really wouldn't get hung up on it.

I mean is this any less fake?

Styling is about how something looks, not what it does.

In my book the definition for this is simple: if exhaust gasses are emitted from all four pipes it's real. Otherwise it's fake.

The grey areas in the styling vs function debate centre on things like spoilers and large alloys.
