have a play around on here with a number of differant cars:
www.confused.com (or an alternative)
Remember to add parents as named drivers if claim and conviction free. Its the only way of doing it as each Postcode/driver will produce varied results (often huge).
Also look at slightly larger (but under-powered) cars that are not as popular with young people but favored by the old or more obscure cars which often produce better results as fewer people crash them e.g.:
Skoda Octavia (I think they even did a 1.2!!)
Suzuki Swift
Mazda 2
as opposed to the standard Focus/Corsa/Golf/Fiesta etc.

I suppose it depends on what you're looking for in a car, what you're hoping to do with it, what level of maintenance you're willing to put up with and what you consider 'unsafe' or not.
With insurance being what it is, classic and kit car insurance nearly always nets the most competitive price. Go for something fairly humble that's easy to get bits for like a Morris Minor, VW Beetle, Mini, Citroen 2CV, or a kit car based on them (Mini-based Dominos, Midases and GTMs, various '70s Beetle rebodies, Lomax Morgan lookalikes with 2CV underpinnings - that sort of thing).
Go for something more modern ad you're inevitably looking at much more expensive premiums, but lower maintenance costs, so I suppose it depends on what you are or aren't willing to cough up for. I suppose you could always rationalise it that insurance is a fixed cost you can't avoid so it makes sense to keep it down, whereas the car may or may not break down. However, if you need the car to work every day and take you long distances at very short notice, the alternative might be a bit annoying.

A student I worked with a few years back bought an MGB, no more expensive to buy than his mates who had standard hatchbacks, and a lot cheaper to insure and generally more interesting. There's a lot to be said for buying something a little bit different.
Word of warning though, if you buy a comfortableish 4 seater while all your mates are in saxo/106/fiesta/etc you will find yourself becomming your mates pub bus driver

I agree with this. Also Bell, they're all the same company so will return pretty similar quotes.im 18 myself, they are the cheapest for me.

As for the car, it's hard to say really, but it'll likely need to be quite a small engine or not the usual young driver choice, unless you have deep pockets for insurance. I still have my first car, a 1.2 Clio. Pretty cheap to buy and look after, as long as you get a good one, just get your first years no claims and your price will plummet next year.
Some say go for a classic, but all depends on what your needs are really.

Tell them it has no security features, and that you keep it on the street - add your parents (or older drivers) as named drivers if you can
And admiral group offer a 10 month policy that still gives a years NCB. I'd opt for that

I had been looking at a rover 200 1.1, because my mum used to have a 214si before she got her new car, basically what I'm looking for in a car, is just a nice clean runabout, reliable but nippy, and doesn't use loads of fuel
but thanks so far, because all your suggestions have helped me a lot

As are confused.com, which gave me a quote from Bell about £100 cheaper than my Admiral renewal, whcih Admiral then matched. Madness. To be honest OP your postcode is very significant with insurance, just try punching different cars that you want into your online quotes and see what trends start to appear.

I went for a 1.5 Almera and even as a 3 door it was half the price of a Corsa to insure.
I like the sound of that, how much does a decent one cost, do you know?e.g. http://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-motorbikes/niss...
