I was walking the dog today and I noticed a phenomenon that is puzzling me.
Several drivers passed me without wearing their seatbelt. The majority of these drivers were young ( I am 55 so anyone under 30 is young). When I learnt to drive the wearing of seatbelts was not compulsory so when the law was changed I had to adjust my driving habit and wear one.
Anyone under 30 must have grown up having to wear a seatbelts, either as a passenger or when learning to drive. Therefore I must conclude that anyone under 30 who does not wear their belt has made a conscious not to do so. What is puzzling me is why they make this decision? Is it bravado? Or do they think it looks cool? As I am old and so unhip I need two belts to hold my trousers up, would someone kindly explain this phenomenon to me.Thanks

I used to work with a young guy (30ish) who used to this. Very image conscious so vanity I think.

Your only noticing this now?

I was against mandatory retesting for old people but after this thread I think its a good idea. Its obvious that your observational skills are inadequate long before the big 5-5.

This subject REALLY gets on my nerves.....

I am 18 and never even turn the key without having it on, and nearly all my mates who have cars choose to not wear their seatbelts.

it really fcensoreds me off, how can anyone be that idiotic, I mean REALLY, putting your own life in danger to look "cool"

Jeez hopefully natural selection should take them out. tw*ts

They were talking about this on Radio 2 a while back and people that had "medical" dispensation and did not have to wear one.

One woman, who was somehow deemed safe enough to be behind the wheel, had exemption because wearing a seatbelt gave her a panic attack. Sorry this affects her so badly but you gotta question if she's stable enough to be in control of a car at all! Really bugged me some of the pathetic excuses given.

Another excuse was that a person had an accident without wearing a seatbelt. They were thrown from the car and the car was subsequently hit. The person in question survived but said they would have been more seriously injured had they been in the car. Remarkable situation, but a ste excuse to never wear a seatbelt.
