Looking to replace a thirsty aging Vauxhall with something that's got a great mpg.

She likes the Polo...which is ok but I'm looking to spend £5K and she wants something newer than a 55 plate which most Polos are advertised at.

A Fiesta.....about 50-60K in a 1.4 or 1.6 TDI? I don't know a lot about these engines but should be pretty reliable.

Any other ideas please? About £5K to spend on a 56 plate or higher ideally 60mpg.

Thanks

Mark.

Mazda 2 is a great little car and you should be able to find a decent 57 plate for about £5K

like this one perhaps - http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/m...

Mrs. Rooster rather likes her latest - a Fiat Panda. It's the top-spec Eleganza model with climate, electrics (Italian...) and a nice interior. It goes well, uses no fuel (or so she thinks, 'cos I fill it) and is about this
>-< big so she can park it anywhere.

Must admit it puts a smile on my face every time I drive it, too.

60+mpg, low tax, and you don't have to use the stinky black pumps at the garage wink

We have one of these

Gets 60mpg - ours is Tekna spec which has loads of toys. Wife loves it - dynamically not brilliant but my missus was never a rally driver. Good, reliable transport -small on outside, big on inside philosophy......

I think a Note fits the bill rather well

Suzuki Swift? Seat Ibiza? Skoda Fabia?
I think I know what may happen and this will involve looking at cars and (in what will appear to be a completely random sequence) various cars yes and no'd. Update the thread with this list.;-)

Thanks for all of those. The other one I thought of was the 1.6 Peugeots diesels.

Anyone got any comments in reliability etc.

With reliability on this stuff you'll be unlucky if anything goes seriously wrong with whichever car you buy as long as its been serviced to schedule. If it does then you'll be able to raid the scrappers for bits, and main dealers won't be too expensive for little stuff that falls off or fails

Diesel is more expensive then petrol to buy at the pumps so that distorts the MPG advantage of a diesel so your 60Mpg diesel is doing the same cost per mile as a 57mpg petrol

Diesel cars cost more to buy

Diesel cars are more inclined to go expensively wrong

Unless you do over abut 15000miles a year then forget it

Avoid the Peugeot 1.6 diesel at all costs (also fitted to Fiesta's).

Do a search on DV6TED4 problems and you'll find a huge amount of info on carbon build up issues these suffer from causing turbo failure (and worse)

Sorry to troll, but I have never seen one of those being driven well or spiritedly. I hope you are the exception wink

Most of the time I am stuck in a queue of traffice behind one...

To be fair, it is not a car to be driven spiritedly. It can be hustled along but does not inspire confidence on the limit. However, that is the last thing on the mind of my pregnant wife and three year old daughter.

If you are ever on the Isle of Wight and get overtaken by a Nissan Note - it is probably me ......biggrin

£5k would get you a good Suzuki Swift. We just bought a 1.5 GLX for the wife, as that suited her needs perfectly. You will be able to get a 1.6 Swift Sport for £5k, and these are great fun (standard swifts are also good fun to drive).

Oh I can imagine, but here in beautiful Wiltshire and Dorset, they all seem to be speed limited to 45 mph wink

Glad to hear you have a crack at it though!

I had heard of problems with Peugeot's electrics and dash but thought their Diesel engines were solid. I also wasn't aware that its the same diesel in the Fiesta so thanks.

I really do hesitate to do this, but how about...

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2013...

Much kit & comfort, many mpgs (not 60, mind, but certainly 50+), much reliability, plenty space.

Coat please!
