Purchased a car for my eldest today. Coincidentally the number plate spells out the name of another family member. It's a standard plate in AB12 CDE format and means nothing to my eldest but I'm not sure how easy it would be to transfer the plate and how I would replace m daughters number plate (if that makes sense....)

To clarify - the is what I'm thinking about

Give number plate from new car to relative. (he would ave to wait until he gets a newer car before he could use it)
Replace number plate on daughters car with another plate (either a normal one or one with her name on it)

Any advice as to process / costs / potential complications gratefully received....

It sometimes says on v5 no "not transferable" or some such thing, so you probably can't do it.

You just need to apply to put it on retention, that takes the plate off and assigns the car a replacement number.

You then get a certificate that you can use to put on another car later, the first retention only lasts 12 months but you can extend it.

iIRC it costs about £105 and then £25 each year later to hold it on retention

Cheers guys - the link below seems to confirm.

Basically I do a transfer and then get her a new reg for her car.

Normally the plate you then get is non transferable, but not always.

If you remove the registration from a car, it will be replaced by a 'randomly generated' one of the same vintage.

[Presumably] to prevent you generating an endless sequence of random plates, the replacement plate would be non-transferable.

This makes more sense for the really old style 3-letters, 3 numbers plates, and some such, where an 'limitless' ability to generate these could be quite lucrative. Not so sure it makes sense for the prefix style and onwards, given the costs involved.

If the plate that's come on your car spells out a name I would think it likely that it was bought specifically for that reason in the past and therefore should be transferable. The DVLA don't usually accidentally issue plates that happen to spell out names, they hold them back.

As has been already said, your V5 will state whether it's transferable or not.
