So after a few drinks at a party last night we drove my mum home, she sat in the front with the Mrs driving and I sat in the back of the Passat with my daughter, something that I've never done in 7 years of owning the car. My daughter said to me after about 15 minutes, 'Dad, put your seat belt on'. After belting up I realised that this was the first time I'd worn a seat belt in the back of a car before! It did feel odd. Is it law to wear one in the back?

Yes, come to think of it, the only exception is if the car doesn't have them.

Jesus Christ.

Why on earth would it be a law in the front and not the back? If anything, you can do more damage in the back.

Note that for adults, it's they that get done for not wearing a seat belt. If it's kids in the back, then the driver gets done.

I agree, though, it does feel a bit weird - I guess that's probably an age thing.

Yet I believe it was, at one point? Or maybe it was just that cars didn't have to have them in the back.

Until I was about 17 I never ever wore a seatbelt because most people who drove me around did not wear them

Unusually it was only when my friends started getting licences did they all insist on me wearing a belt whether at front or back

Of course now it is just habit and TBF all those people that didnt wear belts before do now.

Laws for compulsory front seat belts came in 1983. Rear seat belt laws followed in 91.

It's not such a stupid question and it was that way for quite some time*. I regularly see people (mainly Asians) with their kids un-tethered in the back. Hanging off the head rests in the middle of the two front seats and clowning around isn't a rare sight at all.

Edit * 8yrs according to the last poster.

Yep I've been around long enough to have been through every variant of seat belt laws.

The odd thing is I feel weird not wearing a seatbelt in the front, but weird wearing one in the back. On the odd occasion I do get in the back of the car, I don't naturally reach for it.

I don't think I could travel in any part of a car without a seatbelt on, I wouldn't feel safe at all.

Lots of cars flash lights & make beeping sounds if any passenger is not belted up. Even my old one does.

Just because it once was legal doesn't mean it isn't monumentally retarded. In the front it's bad enough as you'll generally kill yourself...

...but in the back you'll take yourself AND the person sitting in front of you out too.
