New car choice and can't decide between Skoda and BMW
Discussion
I really can't decide on a new car. Found 2 which are suitable but cannot decide the 2. What are PH's views on them and the choice. Both are diesels.
2008 BMW 318d with 32k on the clock and 13k, or a 2010 Skoda VRS with 25k for £500 less than the BMW.
Both are from main dealers, and I know there will be more price movement on the Skoda than the BMW.

As an avid BMW fan ...... that is not a BMW, it is a diesel engined piece of s
te without enough power to pull the cheese off the end of your knob !
And have you seen the reports on that engine ? (If not ....google it) ..... and that bit is deadly serious, there was even a thread on here about it recently, people say it has very expensive timing chain issues.
If you want a BMW, please buy a petrol one with at least a six cylinder engine, otherwise you'll just encourage them to keep turning out s
te cars with d on the back.
Obviously I wouldn't choose either, but if I were forced, somehow, posibly upon pain of death, I'd go for the skoda ....... mainly because I'd be ashamed to drive a diesel BMW.

We (for the wife) bought a petrol Octavia VRS over an E90 330i, but I don't know much about the diesels. The BMW has a more accomplished chassis and better engine but frankly the Octavia won on every other metric.
Given that you're looking at what is often considered to be one of BMW's worst modern engines, I'd say the Octavia is the better car. If you could stretch to a 330d, the BMW would probably be the better overall package, though.

Your thinking of the N47 engine, this one has the M47 engine, already checked that

The M47 being the older engine.Kong said:
Depends what your requirements are. The BMW will be nicer to drive and be more economical but the Skoda will be faster and more practical.
Both will get all my camping and archery gear in, checked that. If it will sit at 80 leptons all day I will be happy. Most of the time it will be my daily hack, and it has to be said, I found the BMW seats more comfortable.

If its a 2008 car it will almost certainly have an N47 not an M47. Post Sep 07 cars should be fitted with the N Series engine.
The M47 being the older engine. But anyway - the Skoda is the better buy.

Tough choice the Beemer isn't the most exciting model & I really need to drive a VRS as everyone raves about them but its owned by the same company as our audi TT-S & that's a complete turd to drive if you want involvement so how can the skoda be any good when most VAG products aren't that exciting.
I think I would scrap both options & go for a high spec mondeo if it was me.
