Hi all, I collected a new car (BMW) yesterday... The dealer asked me if I wanted the Supaguard/bks cleaning kit when I bought it and all that 'protection', I said no - but they added it to the invoice anyway. Stupidly, I didn't spot it and signed the agreement etc.

Any chance I can get this back now that I've taken the car? I know, always check the fine print, etc. Or is this just an expensive £399 (!) lesson? Wondering if anyone got this refunded later. Really angry with myself.

Depends on how much of a stink you kick up!

It's out of order anyone adding it after you said no, and that should be the point you raise.

It's not all bks though, put on properly by a decent trained valeter it can make your car cleaning easier and protects the paint. If its just been slapped on then it's as good as snake oil.

Is the Gard X on the order form that you signed, if it is and the finance docs match up to the final figure on the order form then I would say that it's an expensive lesson for you as you didn't read the paperwork properly?

Or is it not on the order form you signed however it is on the finance docs, ie the amount to be finance is £399 higher (cost of the Gard X?) than the signed order form, in that case then I would say you have a good case to either get a £399 refund or have the agreement cancelled and then new finance docs signed to reflect the lack of Gard X?

I think that lot reads ok?!

It costs the dealer £30 and they'll pay the valeter an extra £5 to slap it on.

It's one of the biggest ripoffs in the motor industry and they have charged you £399 for having the privilege of being the next sucker to be conned.

The different products that are available are fit for purpose, if the paint is suitably cleaned and clay barred first. Then the product (usually a 2-step process) applied according to the instructions. So applied by an experienced (and honest) detailer, the products have some merit, but they way it is usually applied 'in the trade' is a joke, and an insult to your intelligence.

Plus they try to convince you that it will help the resale vale. Ask them if that's the case when they offer you sweet FA for your car next time.

Well said.

In my experience valeters in dealerships are rarely given time to apply Supaguard, GardX etc properly.
However, if you haven't asked for it you should not have to pay for it!

Did you pay the extra £399 for it, or was it absorbed into the overall price in lieu of a discount?

Have they actually added an additional amount, or just broken it out of the agreed total?

I had this on a Merc once, the total was as agreed but when they presented the invoice they'd broken out £299 for MB Stargard. I saw this as an opportunity to get another £299 off but they weren't having any of it. I honestly wouldn't have minded if they'd said upfront and I still think I got a very good deal on the car, but this soured it.

No, it's an additional cost. The salesman asked me if I wanted it, I said no. He tried to convince me that with my solid 'special' paint (i.e. not special at all) that I would be a fool not to have it. I said I didn't want it, it's a rip-off and he said 'well it's your choice' and I thought that was the end of it. He then moved on to trying to sell me gap insurance and other such bks, to which I declined also. None of those were added to the invoice.

That's just the cleaning kit, not the chemicals that are supplied to us to actually apply to the car.

Lifeshine is much better and the autoglym cleaning kit is nice too.

Gap insurance isn't bks, it's the only additional product dealers sell which is worth having.

Do the chemicals that are applied to the car total £400? Or even £100 though + labour?

Not through BMW it isnt at £600 for a 3 year term, you can get it for £150 elsewhere.

No they don't. But applied properly they take a good few hours (I don't know how long as I'm happily not a valeter) and of course there is the dirty horrible PROFIT word in there. Eugh, I feel dirty just saying it hehe

We used to pay ~70 for a kit. To properly apply to a used car we would spend around 6-8hrs perping the paintwork, interior before applying protection.

So yes. It's expensive, but if done properly, it's far from a 'rip off'.

OK, thanks. I'm just trying to see how long it would take them. If it does take them say 8 hours to do then I don't feel so bad at potentially losing £400. I just can't see it taking that long on a brand new car though, what exactly is there to do? The paint should be completely untarnished, surely.
