Anyone else, like me, find large engined large cars with minimal kit levels strangely appealing? For example - I would love an E39, a pre facelift one, with at least the 2.5 litre engine, steel wheels and manual air conditioning - or no air con. I don't know why, there is just something that I like about them, and find appealing. Less to go wrong as well wink

I suppose this is also related to the other thread, small cars with high kit levels, what's the most ill equipped larger car you have seen? Makes me chuckle to watch Aussie police chase shows and see plod wind the window down on a relatively new commodore, for example.

A Mercedes W124 would be right up your street. I suppose it's no accident that they're seen as the last of the great old school Mercedes

They are rubbish without 6 cylinders and leather though smile

Nothing like a white, 2.0 Carlton to show you that the most important 'luxury' is space.

They did a 1.8 for extra sluggishness!

I'll take 6 cylinders, but not worried about leather wink.

Something satisfying about such a poverty spec S. It's had a few bits and bobs done, and it only £795.

No I have my eyes elsewhere in a few month's time smile, I think Garlick should buy it and it should be a SOTW special.

One old Mercedes is enough for now.

I don't get that at all. Why wouldn't you want the dual climate? It's no more prone to going wrong really.

I'm not saying per se that it would go wrong, more trotting out the old adage! As I said, it's a perverse appeal really. My grandad had a 325 tds with steel wheels, beige cloth seats, no air con, a plastic steering wheel, and a sunroof. Brilliant.

Skoda Superb, and yes, those are wheel trims. As seen at many a provincial taxi rank.

I once bought a Vauxhall Carlton. One like this

It had no kit in it, other than a stereo. Manual windows, and I think an 1800 engine. It wasnt very powerfull, having been round the clock a few times, and used as much oil as petrol, but for £400, it got me about.

I tried drifting it round a roundabout one time on the outskirts of Alton while I lived down there, it didnt do much. Eventually it either ran out of fuel or something fell off and died, it never started again and was towed away by the scrap man. I smelt of old every time I got out of it, just one of those musty smells that never quite disappears.

I don't understand whats so brilliant about a car with no AC. Press the off button and bingo, no AC. Then you can have it back when you decide actually its quite nice.

Volvo S70? 10V and cloth interior

Peugeot 605

Posession of either *will* make you look like a minicab driver.

As I said I don't know! I suppose it stems from happily driving around for ages in a Triumph 2000 with nothing in it except seats and air. Oh, and a bit of veneered timber.
