Afternoon everyone, i've recently received my renewal from admiral and it's pretty competitive at £1300 annual. There is an 18%!! interest for monthly payments which I will probably have to do, as I don't have that sort of money lying around at the moment.

The reason my renewal is so high is because i've held my license for 10 months and owned my mr2 since october. However, I have 1 years NCB (admiral do a scheme where you get 1 years ncb in 10 months) and i'm also a member of the mr2oc. I'm also over 25.

Does anyone know of a classic insurance company that will insure me? I'm struggling here. The compare websites are throwing back rubbish.

Have you phoned any of the classic insurers?

If not, buy a copy of Practical Classics (or whatever) and work through the insurance adverts in the back pages.

Most classic policies (a) require the car to be a second vehicle, (b) require the car to be garaged, and (c) limit mileage to sub-5k p.a. There might be some flex, but that's the typical set up. Do you fit the criteria?

Try classicline.

They did my Porsche 924s with me at 23 years old (2 non fault accidents and 3 points) with 3 named drivers for 5k a year (only car owned but insured on others) and non-garaged for £550.

It's limited mileage. Less than 3000pa. But it's not garaged and it's my only car. I'll check out the mag, thanks.

People spout about getting classic insurance on mr2's all the time. I don't think it's as easy as they make out.

How old does a car have to be for it to be considered 'classic'?

Most places say 15+ years.

There's no set rule. Just a matter of trial and error with a few insurers.

Happy to report that classicline gave me a brilliant quote of £880 and that includes roadside recovery and legal cover. Only problem is they can't offer payment in installments. It's either a one off payment or you can pay half now and half in 30 days. Going to have to investigate. Maybe the bank will increase my overdraft or something.

Have you tried Lancaster? They insured all my mk1 MR2's and my MK2 turbo (via some other company whose name escapes me).

Very much this.

Admiral do classic car insurance but only on cars 20+ years and they have to be on a pre approved list (you can request for one to be added, usually means a quote hasn't been done on the particular car before)

That's a good way, if not a 0% credit card and pay it off over 6/12 months if your credit score is good enough and you trust yourself to make the payments?

Oh and I got money off for joinging the Porsche owners club (cost half of the membership discount) so may be worth asking if there is an MR2 club discount?

My 04 plate MG ZT V8 is on a classic policy. Not managed to get my 2000reg Mondeo ST200 on one though.

Think it’s often down to rarity rather than age, or a combination of the two.

In short I think many companies have there own criteria. So just ring around and try your luck. You'll probably need to agree limited mileage though and confirm you’re an owner’s club member.

Classic policy worked out £600+ cheaper than conventional one for me with better cover and agreed valuation. So well worth trying.

Well i've signed up with classicline insurance and told admiral thanks but no thanks.

To be clear, the difference between them was £500ish. Admiral quoted £1350 and classicline £840. Quite a difference.

Does anybody else have experience with classicline?

You have done the right thing, I was with Admiral last year with a Multicar policy, this years renewal was £200 more than last year, so I looked around and actually saved £250, so cheaper than last year and used separate policies for each car, bit of a faff but worth it for the savings.
Bit late but I found Footman James were very reasonable for my TVR and accept car club membership as discount.
Maybe worth a look for next year.
