Hi Everyone;
I am new to Piston Heads, and I am hoping that someone out there will be able to help me.
I have a 2005 facelift Vectra 2.2 Direct Design Vectra, it has 80k and is in very good condition. Since I had it last year it has started making some very strange noises from the engine, which is hard to explain. Some days no problem, nice and quiet, other days it sounds worse than a clattery diesel.
The noise appears to be coming from the drivers side near the air filter, although I could be wrong? I could only explain it sounds like somethings loose and rattling around, a bit like a rattle snake!
When driving in low gears and rolling to a stop it almost sounds like a large clock being wound up.
When it went in for an oil service last year the garage said when they opened the drain plug, there was no oil inside, however, at no point did any warninglights come on. It has continued to use a fair bit of oil since requiring frequent top ups, no signs of any leaks on drive or plumes of smoke from exhausts.
After checking oil level again yesterday there was water droplets and yellow sludge on the filler cap and light gray slime on the dip stick. I have never had to top up any collant and the bottle appears to be a red colour.
I would really appreciate it if anyone could offer any advice as to what the problem possibly could be, as I would entrust advice from here far before a dealer!

I was going to suggest a timing chain rattle but i doubt that would explain the oil problem.
I know the old 2.2 z22se engines had a fault where oil wouldnt get onto the chain, cause it to not be lubricated before rattling and snapping.
I'd guess the facelift 2.2 is still chain driven, but like i say, it doesnt explain the oil problem, and im probably talking s
