When did Red Lights become optional to stop at?
Discussion
When they started implementing lights that stop you every day at the same junction despite there being no other traffic coming from the other directions.
If these 'smart' traffic lights worked better people would take more notice of them.
We could learn a lot from some of our European counterparts.

It seems in London, red is the new amber.
When a driver sees a light change from green to amber their first thought isn't 'Can I stop without causing a pile up?' it is 'Can I get through?'.
Oh and then there's usually a tailgater even behind that person, who doesn't even pretend that it was amber as they crossed the line.

I think part of the problem is that where there was once a simple junction or roundabout with no lights that operated perfectly fine, it has now been replaced by an overly complicated set of traffic lights that cause you to be stop-start constantly.
Certainly the case in swindon, where they put traffic lights on so many roundabouts, that they decided to turn them off during non-rush hour as an experiment on one particular roundabout which started out and worked perfectly fine without lights in the first place.
I think people are just getting more and more impatient with having to stop every few seconds whereas before, there would be no hinderance to the journey. Certainly the case for me, which is why I try and walk/cycle most places in town now.

Some of the traffic lights around where I live (and I assume many others on here) are pointless and annoying. Stopping you when nothing is there, not letting enough cars out so causing congestion etc.
I recognise we need traffic lights, but when they're implemented without any thought, or worse, by BRAKE members, it's no wonder people start to ignore them.

The half-wits in Brighton have synch'd the traffic lights to deliberately hold up traffic. And then they have the gall to complain about the pollution on some of the roads!
Wait 'til the 20mph everywhere speed limit starts (and spreads) - mental!http://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/index.cfm?request=...
It does happen loads.
I think like others have said, its due to the fact that there are so many, and so many that do not really help traffic flow, surely if the tarmac is in use thats good, but when its not thats bad, and lights tend to leave large chunks of tarmac unused for ages. An island might be a better choice sometime, but wait, lets put lights on the island too... GRRRR

Something I have noticed recently is if I go through on Amber and its perhaps a little touch and go on the Amber-Red spectrum (because it wasn't safe to stop)
The person who has been tailgating me (making it not safe to stop) also comes through when I know it must blatantly have been red.
