So from my understanding all autos have a kick down button behind the accelerator.

howvwer i test drove 2 FJ cruisers this week and one seemed to not have a kick down.

i would plant my foot, it would rev to 7k and change gear, it didnt drop a gear, and i couldnt even feel a kick down behind the accelerator.

O test drove another one a few days before and im certain there was a kick down.

Any ideas or thoughts??

There's no kick down button as such, just the throttle response to the gearbox. Maybe i'm wrong?

I think it is just a vitualised button to give the feel, they are just using throttle position message from engine ECU sending message to powertrain ECU. Was it an automatic or automated manual? All cars I have driven have had a kickdown apart from Mercedes automated manual.

Its an auto.

I believe they only come in Auto only, with all the 4 wheel drive gear box also.

But this was just in town driving, using normal gear box.

The autos of days gone by had a button. Now things are ecu-controlled, they are generally no more.

My DSG has a kickdown. If I simply push the pedal all the way down it accelerates, however pushing a bit harder there is a definite click and it changes down a gear.

Of course if I put it in Sport and boot it it changes down anyway.

My old S6 Audi had one.....and boy you knew it if you floored it. My current Accord doesn't have one.

My '04 Merc has one. Pretty sure the ECU is in control.

My 135i had one.
If you floored it to the button it might drop a gear depending on the current speed/reves.
But if you pushed onto the button it would drop a gear or two and go into flat out acceleration mode.

Maybe not a button, maybe just a change of pressure on the pedal; but you get the idea.

The 80-90s BMs I've driven had a button under the accelerator for kick down.

My 525 had one, it actually made the car slower (knackered turbo + high revs in a diesel = no go)

I thought this in a friends C220 cdi Coupe.

Your pressing on and its accelerating quite well. You then put your foot to the floor and it drops down a cog and revs to 4.5k which makes it stop accelerating whilst it fumbles about trying to go up a gear again which it has already come from. Pointless.

I off-road in one when I get the chance and hadn't really thought about kickdown, it just does it. Shouldn't be a problem on any of them as they all have the same engine and gearbox regardless of spec iirc. The gearbox reacts pretty quickly to a request for more shove in ours.
