This is possibly a stupid/obvious question, but opinion seems to be split when I google for an answer.

New car (for the wife, a 2008 Nissan Note Teckna 1.6 auto). Suggested tyres are 185/55 R16 for which there are NO all season tyres available.

If i put on 195/55 R16 there are plenty (vredestein quatrac 3 in particular).

As long as the insurance company are happy, would this be ok?

I'm aware the speedometer would be slightly off, but then it isn't particularly accurate anyway.

Thanks.

The rolling radius is the same on those tyres both being 55 and R16!

The width of the tyres won't affect the speedo wobble

No they're not as 55 is a percentage of the width so 55% of 185 is different to 55% of 195.

Use a tyre comparison site to work this out OP.

Dammit my own ambiwlans moment! It had to happen biggrin

So technically I'm wrong and I'll happily hold my hands up to it.

The difference appears to be an under reading of 0.5mph at 30mph and 1.1mph at 60mph.

Wow!

School day for Six Fiend who should know better! (Saturdays used to be school days when I was a lad too smile )

185 rolling radius 191.61cm
195 rolling radius 195.06cm

Speed 1.8% greater than indicated.

I believe the recommended increase is less than 2.5-3% so I seems it should be 'OK'.
