Which car to buy????

Basically I am currently learning to drive and cannot decide which car would be best to buy. I want to get a car with a nice simple engine that I can work on/modify myself that is fairly fast and reasonable insurance. Also a car that has good racing pedigree so over time I would be able to modify it into a real B-road barnstormer!

I like the sound of a small sports like an mg or mx5 but would like at least 4 seats so I can fit my mates in but will look into them, cheers. Also I've been looking at the minis as well but they are just so expensive!!! It's so annoying cos they are such a great car! I've been looking at a nova 1.3/1.4 sr would that be any good or is there a better alternative?
