My wheel has been damaged badly by a pothole. The tyre also has big gash in the sidewall now.

Can I claim from the council, or DVLA - The pothole has been there for some time now. Its so fking large there should be some sort of warning.

Why didn't you drive around it?

Only if they have already been informed about it.

Playing devil's advocate, but....

As you know the large pothole has been there 'some time', did you ever report it to the council so that they could repair it?

Given the number of them we have following the snow/ice I'd say they will make you work for any claim. Good luck!

You drove into something stationary, I assume your car is equipped with brakes. We all make mistakes, I have but fortunately none of them have caused damage.

As far as I know you claim off the council unless it's a primary route or something like that. And it has to be of a certain depth but I can't remember what that is. And I'm guessing you need pictures... (In other words I'm not particularly helpful but can tell you there is hope!)

But yes you can I'm just not sure how, I'm sure someone will have done it and can enlighten you.

Good luck thumbup

Surely the amount of road tax we pay someone must be responsible no?

We pay 'road tax' for pollution now you know, it's not for putting back into the roads

Pedant mode engaged

Road tax doesn't exist, hasn't since 1937.

Vehicle Exise Duty is a tax to penalise you for polluting.

Road maintanence is paid for for general taxation.

Take five fella and calm down, if you come to PH for advise you're gonna get a little ribbing, some sarcastic answers but most likely some help too. People have said that you can claim but they might try and bounce you around departments, fill in a bunch of forms etc to try and get out of it. That's how I read it anyway. Phone the council, they might just tell you!

i drove over what i can only assume was a well the other night. Huge bang, thought i had royally fked up a wheel at the least. pulled over to check and all seemed well, except my car now pulls slightly to the right, hoping it is only tracking that has been knocked a bit out..
Went past today and it has been filled in, be interesting to see how long it takes for it to open up again like every other pothole ever to exist.

This. I report all potholes that are on a route I frequently use. Reported 2 last week and both had been fixed on my journey home from work today, I like to think I had something to do with it! There is no point just expecting others to sort it out.
