A friend of a friend has spotted this:

in a field near Cambridge.

apparently its pretty overgrown, though in the picture it looks pretty clear to me.

not sure what I'm hoping to find out by posting this, but I figured the great hivemind of PH might be able to come up with something.

- is it just an FV432? it looks like it has a crane on the back of it, but not quite the same kind as on an FV434

- is it likely still owned by the MOD? Waterbeach barracks is near by

- what's the big logo on the washboard mean? I assume it identifies which unit it used to operate with?

I wanted to buy a road legal version of something similar years ago to drive the kids to Kindergarten in, I'd even found one not too far away.

The wife wouldn't allow it. I failed as a man that day.

the number plate looks like a military one doesn't it? do they not change when 'normal people' take ownership?

yeah the plate is military. I wasnt sure if they change them once they get sold to the public; i was going to take it as proof that it still belongs to be MOD, but then I got the idea in my mind that I had seen privately owned old landies and whatnot still with military plates, though the more I think about it the less convinced I am

or possibly the old military plates go with the vehicle when it is released by the army, but if you want to drive it on road you have to get normal civvy style plates?

so it could be privately owned, but not road legal?

If it has a crane it'll be a 434 which was the REME recovery version, these are still used today, the plate can't be used outside of the Army but that could mean the private buyer hasn't legally registered it, I think its highly unlikely that this owned by the Millitary, is it on a camp?

This is the 434:

Just has a crane and I think some might have a plow blade on the back for winching or some reccy mech type thing.

yeah, I looked up pictures of the 434 just to double check that it isn't one, but it certainly looks like there is something crane like on the back of it.

I have been informed that the person who found it is a , so it may well get hauled off and weighed in soon enough anyway frown

Wait, what?? How can they do that when its not theirs? They've just found it, it doesnt give them ownership rights

We'd gladly have that beast, it is indeed a 434. When our military kit leaves the army the army reg isn't removed but obviously you do have to register it under a new plate, usually age related.
Whereabouts is it near Cambridge? Wouldn't mind going to have a look

I'm not sure where exactly it is, only that its in cambridge somewhere.

Is it definitely a 434 then? the crane looks a lot different, or is it covered by a penthouse?

also do you know what the marking on the washboard is?
