You have a set amount of cash, you can get a 300 bhp car with a bottom rung badge or a 200 bhp one with a premium badge, which do you choose, both same class, drive layout and size, i.e. not an SUV vs hot hatch or rwd vs front.

Are we assuming the same build/interior/ride quality/ handling etc?
If the badge is literally the only variable then I'd choose power. But if the premium marque is nicer/better quality then I'd choose that.

Don't care about badges, have happily owned a Hyundai. Don't care about big power output, currently on my second MX5 and both have been the smaller engined versions.

I'd buy the car I preferred for my own selfish reasons, not for what people in the pub/street/work think.

In hindsight, I wish I had bought a car which I wanted and not listened to anyone else when picking.

ATM, Power is > Badge but Power doesn't mean everything.

I would buy an Audi A3 TDI S-Line. "Superb cars, the finish, the power, the handling, the imagine!"

I don't care for badges or power to be quite honest. Power's nice if the car drives well, but that's the number one thing, it must drive well. But no, I couldn't give a toss about what badge it has on the nose.

I'd like to think I bought my 160bhp Lotus because it was good to drive, and not because of the badge.

I certainly loved my 160bhp RX7 despite it having neither power or a posh badge.

Neither power nor badge are really a major part of my buying decision.

I will admit to buying the Lotus over a VX because I decided it was more "special". And most of that was the badge.

They do drive quite differently though. When I bought mine, the Vx had servo brakes and the Elise didn't, which was my decision made instantly. However, the Vx also had a heavier engine, especially at the point when I bought mine and the Elise had the k series. My point is that there was a badge agnostic reason for buying the Elise over the VX220.

It's a good car to bring up though, because the two manufacturers are normally total opposites when it comes to making cars, which lends itself to completely opposite brand images.

I really liked the way the VX drove. The Elise just felt better defined.
