Budget of about £5000

I want something large, fast, manual and an estate! So far i've looked at the Mitsubishi Legnum and Nissan Stagea so far, but they're hard to get in manual so perhaps want something more common? Any suggestions?

Volvo V70 T5, V50?

Possibly a Subaru 2.5 WRX, maybe not the most reliable but ticks the fast box

How fast? Your two suggestions so far suggest fairly!?

Does it need to be huge? V50 T5? Impreza/Legacy?

Well fairly fast preferably but anything with a bit of punch is fine

And yeah it needs to be pretty large!

I'm looking for same. Went to see a V50 T5 on Monday, was fine if a little bland, but boot was far too small.

Almost bought a Legacy last year, but quit work so thought I'd save my pennies.

Looking at Foresters also, was hoping to go and see one Fri, but it's an import from Eire apparently and the dealer hasn't come back with an answer to a simple question.

Might broaden the search to saloons.

Manual Legnums are thin on the ground but there is one on sale on ebay at the moment. They might not be as fast as a impreza wagon but they are a little more discreet. 5k would get you a tidy one plus change for a few mods. That being said there is something about the sound of the imprezas, and you have more scope for tuning.

Legacy smile

Either the 240bhp 3.0 NA or the 280bhp 2.0 turbo, both are good.

I think if you stretched to around £6k, you could get a B6 S4 Avant. The belts and turbos put me off the B5 a bit.

B5 S4 avant. The most reliable car that I have ever owned. It's going to break now isn't it.
