Is anyone here running a BMW I6 on LPG? I'm particularly interested in the M50 era engines (E34/E36/E38).

m52 328i e36 touring here,

on a very simple "closed loop" single point system.

Get on average 25-26mpg on Gas, currently works out as approx 45mpg equiv petrol costs.

I have re placed the vapourisor, as the one fitted started to leak-took 1hr and NO specialist tools.

I have a garage fairly near home and one near work, plus 2 or 3 on my most often used other routes.

sitting at 60mph in the inside lane= 280miles from a tank (50L it holds- tank is a 60L tank)

"hoonage" nets 230miles from a tank.

£35 a fill, whats not to like?

I did use it as a daily commuter (min 65 miles a day), but have now passed it to the Mrs and got a derv for daily duties (its an old vw that eats veg;))

I have had NO mechanical failures due to the LPG system with the engine, and service it according to the Dash service lights.

Done 16.5K in it so far since April last year, total cost inc Petrol (when I couldnt use due to Vap leak)
£2308 for the 16500miles, or £0.14 a mile. Allowing for 33mpg on Petrol, at £1.359/L(£3090), I'm the cost of the car upsmile

Fitting a multi point new one should see better MPG on Gas, no discernable power loss and a fairly short payback period

No problems insuring it, servicing I did myself (mine is very simple!)

I'm currently contemplating fitting it to my e30 320i, as I see many advantages to it.

Thanks for that, interesting stuff.
I've been driving my E34 525i since July, and while I can afford the petrol, LPG is starting to look very attractive. I plan to keep the car for the foreseeable (because I like it and I dislike the complexity of modern cars), which means it'll be doing between 10 and 12k per year until it has to go for some reason.
From my initial research, £1k would be a reasonable budget for a DIY multi-point kit from Tinley Tech, and even budgetting a generous £100/year for LPG system servicing, I'd be able to break even in around a year and it's all gravy from there.
The difference in performance, economy and reliability was what I'm interested in so your figures help very much (they're broadly as I expected except now I realise I may want to reduce my LPG system servicing budget slightly!)

No bother!meant to say a replacement vap was £75,so not exactly expensive!

Also,go for the spare wheel well tank, the e34 boot is fairly shallow and a large cyl tank would eat most of the space.

Good luck!

Thanks! the spare wheel well is pretty big so I reckon I could get at least a 60L capacity in there. I need my boot space so this was the plan from the beginning.
