The MGF is off the road for a couple of weeks, and I am working in Reading, so usually the Mrs drops me off at the station, (Sandhurst) and I get the train to Reading. Been doing it a week, no dramas.
Started late today, so had to make my own way to the station, did not fancy the 1 mile walk, so decided to get a bus from Owlsmoor to Bracknell. A journey of about 3 miles.
Got the bus stop in plenty of time, hopped on... 4.50 for a 3 mile journey.....
I can understand the prices being high if the bus was not busy, and you have to subsidise the route, but it was pretty much full downstairs.
The journey took 45 minutes, a journey I could have driven it in about 10.
In all seriousness, where is the incentive to take the slow, noisy, and overpriced public transport?

The only reason I can think is that you don't have to worry about finding parking and remortgaging your house to pay for it once you locate an available bay.

You could have walked 3 miles faster than that.

That's the problem for those of us who have a choice. We just don't want to. Partly for those reasons.
I could take a 2 bus for my commute but I choose to walk. It's too short to justify the car. I've started to enjoy walking, actually.
Actually the other reason is that I was advised to do gentle exercise for my back. It has worked very well so far.

Because you are not allowed to drive when you are drunk. I had to get a bus back from the pub last night for just that reason.

Margaret Thatcher might have said:
A man who, beyond the age of 26, finds himself on a bus can count himself as a failure.

Only wimps give the chauffeur the night off when their services are required.

I live 4 train stations from my work and a 15 minute walk, even when I took my bike with me and timed it to perfection it took 30 minutes from my door and cost about 10 return. I can drive it in 15 and buy, run and insure a car 200 a month, plus use it for other things.

Unless you have no free parking within a 10 minute walk from your work you would be mental to use public transport for anything.

I agree..... the last few places I have worked have been a bloody nightmare to get to on the odd occassion that I have needed public transport.
Does make me sick that the government are trying to "price you" onto public transport with the cost of fuel, when public transport really is not a viable alternative.

Rarely do I take the bus yet I have two memorable moments when doing so.

1) Drunk on the bus relieves himself back into his empty can of Super Kestrel. It then slips out his hand when the bus brakes then rolls right down to the front of the bus whilst sloshing p**s all over peoples feet.

2) Two junkies loudly discussing the sale of methadone. Apparently junkie one will be administered it in the pharmacy, then come outside and transfer it to the other person. They knew that it had to be swallowed in front of the pharmacist therefore I can only assume they were planning on doing a straight transfer of vomit. Classy!

This. Sorry but you've been had - paying more money for a slower journey just to avoid excercise. If it rains get a coat.

The only times I've been on a bus in the last five years were a)too far to walk and not practical to leave a car or bike at the destination (because I'm leaving for several weeks), or b)I'm pissed* (and it's too far or too rural to walk).

  • Given mini1380cc's statement, I wish to point out I've never been that pissed or inconsiderate - just enough of a night that I wouldn't want to take any chances driving.

4.50 to travel three miles in 45 mins, isn't that some kind of record ?

You could have walked it in that, a very average cyclist could do it in 15, a fast one in less than ten, for pretty much free.

Why do people run out of ideas when their car isn't working
