I will more than likely be buying one of these cars in the next 6-8 months, mainly for the Mrs, with me driving it occassionally.
My Mrs would be happy with a Bog standard whatever. But i ain't, looking for something with a bit of Poke, and fun.

So here's the List of possible choices :

1 - Mini Cooper SD, or JWC
2- BMW 1 Series Diesel 170bhp
3- Audi TT TDI 170bhp
4- Audi S3 Petrol 265bhp
5- Volkswagen Scirocco TDI 170nhp

I suppose thats not a bad wee list to be able to choose from. Most are diesels, as you can see. I am running a subaru at present, and i am sick to the back teeth of filling it every 200 odd miles. I know overal costs ect, with depreciation ect, that i'd probably break even with keeping the scoob, but i want something a bit newer too, more so for the Mrs.

So what would you choose and why?

Audi TT or Scicorro for me - a coupe just looks and feels a little bit more special than a boggo hatch, important for the weekend blat smile

The Scirocco was top of my List initially, but only negative, which would be the same for the TT also, was all round visibility. For me, it aint an issue, but the Mrs noticed it straight off. However, its nothing a reversing camera wont sort out.

Also don't discount a 150bhp tdi and remapping - you might get a better final drive and the economy will be much better than the 170 which tends to get high 30s low 40s.

A remapped 150 unit is likely 5-7mpg more for the same fun.

Never realised that. Is the high 30s low 40s with town driving?

Be good to hear some reports from the S3 owners? 4 wd appealing here, due to the stty winters in Scotland. But i cannot imagine MPG being any different to my Subaru? However, i am still giving it consideration, as this will be a long term car.
