Clio 172 knocking
Discussion
I have today just picked up a Clio 172. I fear I may have bought a lemon but that's another story!
Basically the car seemed fine on test drive but since I have discovered a nasty knock. When braking it pulls to the left and when I release the brake and accelerate it clunks and pulls to the right. I suspect it to be a sticking caliper so will go out and investigate that. If I decelerate to a halt without the brakes and pull away there is nothing.
Also when reversing onto my drive there was a clunk which is unrelated to this. My mate seems to think this is the top mount, any other ideas?
Other than that (these) the car needs better tyres as they are cheap jobs and a bit of TLC which I don't mind. However I want the mechanics of it sorting before I move onto anything else.

Sounds like wishbones to me. Buy the full arm and you get new ball joints too. Jack each side up put your hands at 9 & 3 and wiggle (any play = wishbones) then put ur hands at 12 & 6 and wiggle (play = ball joints) Calipers are easy to free off yourself (and pennys to buy 2nd hand off ebay) No play after the above test and calipers fine then may be rack bushes - bout £50 if you fit em yourself or an hours labour at a specialist. cliosport.net
The thing with the 172 is that there are a few things that cause knocking/pulling that are almost consumables.
-Bottom engine mount or "dogbone" goes and downpipe knocks on acceleration. Easy fix and sorts the gearchange.
-Top mounts go all the time and remember to add washers to remove the groaning noise when you replace them.
-Balljoints on mine went every year so either do whole wishbone or buy BJ separately.
-callipers seem to stick no matter how much you clean them, get a refurb, it'll save loads of hassle.
and the rear wheel bearings are made of cheese and the rear dampers WILL be shot. seems like loads of things to go wrong but they are all really cheap to fix as half of them are Laguna parts and any spanner monkey can do them.
