My Seat Leon (51 plate) wont start. It does nothing when turning the key apart from flat the dash lights briefly. Over the last few weeks it's been getting a little slower to start, but now wont do anything. Would i be correct in assuming this is a dead battery? I've had the car since 2004 and never changed it, so it would seem like the obvious culprit.

Thanks

Probably, try jump starting it and see what happens.

probably. Older batteries dont like winters. They should be 14v. If they show 12v they need charging/changing.

Do the lights dim when you turn the key??

Sorry but not even close.

14volts is the average charge rate and you cannot tell the condition of a battery by just measuring the static voltage.

OP it does sound like a flat battery but you'll need to find out why first as it may be flat for reasons other than a knackered battery.

Battery is likely kaput.
Buy the biggest cold cranking amp battery you can fit in the holder.

Way back when my 300tdi defenders battery went dead I managed to squash quite a big battery under the seat with a CCA rating around the 900 mark.It was a heavy bugger and bought from my local indy.
Street lights flickered when I started it.(that might be a lie)

Seriously though the CCA was way above the dead batteries CCA and it turned over perfectly every time.
-21 one morning (that horrible very cold winter a couple of yrs ago) and it fired first turn.

The alternator was replaced ~5yrs ago, and the belt to it looks fine, so I'm still thinking battery.

Personally, I would buy a battery charger, charge the battery overnight, shove it back in, and see where you are. My Mk1 Mondeo 'dies' about once a year. I whip it out and charge it using a £25 Argos battery charger I bought a few years back and it works a treat. As said above, batteries can get old and lose their charge. Once charged back up again it could be good for another year or a day. In which case buy a new battery. Good luck!

Also, as long as you don't mark the battery charger, you can return it to the store with the reciept and get a refund, lol

Probably battery but check the voltage as above.
