Rear fog lights...
Discussion
I propose that these should be phased out on modern vehicles. I was driving in very bad weather on the M1 yesterday and their misuse by many drivers was dangerous. Despite the fact there was adequate visibility to make out rear lights some distance away, about 5% of drivers thought that it was necessary to use their fog lights, making it harder to detect braking and generally causing a distraction. One guy I was maintaining a good distance from even elected to switch his on randomly after I had been following him for several miles. As they were on both sides I initially thought he was braking. I wonder how many of these drivers looked into the distance and saw those other drivers using their fog lights and though "hmm, that's really helping everyone out - I'll put mine on"?Nobody, I would guess, yet plenty of drivers simply turned them on anyway...
How often does an accident occur because a driver failed to notice a vehicle he was approaching but would have done in time if the said vehicle had rear fogs illuminated?
I say get rid of them and also that the police should make a stand on prosecuting people for using them inappropriately. The punishment for a second offence could involve a good public egging in the local Halfords car park, perhaps? :-)
