BMW rear bike rack for X3 E83 problems...HELP!

I've bought a bike rack off eBay. It's a BMW original worth £350 so pretty happy with £60! Slightly problem! The bike rack attaches to the car in 2 places. The top is not a problem but at the bottom, there is a replacement trim that attaches to the bottom of the boot. The cycle rack then attaches to that trim.
I have a Sport Spec X3. The boot sits flush like this:
The trim appears to be designed to fit this style:
Fiddling with my door, I can see that the flush bit as a peice of trim as well...anyone ever removed it? Anyone think of another way of attaching it to the bottom....is it worth risking using it without the bottom bit and stuffing some rags at the bottom to it scuffin the bumper?
