Well today was an experience,

Coming back from just north of Aberdeen my parents and I stopped to let our dogs have a walk. This done we returned to the car, placed the dogs in the back and closed the hatch as we then sat down to start back off there was a considerable bang/pop which made us all jump. Turns out the rear screen had shattered. There was nobody around, we weren't parked under any trees and the weather wasn't that cold. Yet the screen had truly and unutterably smashed.

What on earth could have caused this? Has anyone had a similar experience? The only thing that had happened since we started off in the morning is that we drove over a drain cover that caused a reasonble thump but other than that there was no obvious reason for the incident. BTW it's a '61 Hyundai i40 estate if that's of any help.

What was unutterable about it?

Happened to me in my 106 GTi about 6 or 7 years ago. Driving along through a village at 30mph and the rear screen just exploded - no appreciable bumps in the road or anything, just BANG! I never did work out what made it happen...

Tempered safety glass does sometimes randomly shatter. One of our patio doors did it a few years ago. IIRC, the tempering process induces a residual stress in the glass (a bit like when you force a badly made component to align with its mounting holes on a car)

I have had a windscreen go on a Sherpa minibus but that was a temp change. I have just Googled the I40 estate and noticed the rear wiper passes through the glass that will be why it has broken. I used to PDI Rovers for Avis and the Montego estates had the same problem. I think it was to do with the clamping nut being over tight.

Same for the 106 the wiper motor passes through the glass. Not a good idea.

Very interesting my dad and I commented on the fact that the motor passed through the screen. Does make you wonder about the testing process though.

In most cases it will be a dicky heated rear connector. It will have been slightly loose, and arking when in use making a "hot point" on the glass. This will have increased the stresses over time until one day it just goes pop.

If there is still a lot of the glass in place, you might still be able to see how the breaking of the glass has radiated out from that point.
