Project mobilise mommy
Discussion
Welcome all to project mobilise mommy.
To set the scene, my old dear is useless with her cars. She's had one, a 206 given to her nearly a decade ago. And what with four learner drivers and a woman who doesn't know the meaning of the phrase mechanical sympathy Elle the Peugeot is suffering a slow and painful death. So the time has come to wave goodbye to the faithful French compare, trade her in for a shiny newer and more reliable model.
Here's the twist, due to being a frankly top class mother, she's helped myself and my sister out a hell of a lot over the last few years, what with myself going through university and helping my sister out when she needed a car. She's not really got a lot of money at the moment. This is where I come in, as I'm about to finish university I've been saving up for summer and have cobbled together around £2000. so the plan is for me to lend the old dear my 2007 seat Ibiza, and get her a new car with my savings and a possible trade in/sale of the 206. Oh and then go and collect what's left of my Ibiza. Leaving her with a better car that she can keep for a while until she can save up enough to get herself what she really wants, a new fiesta.
This is just a welcome to the long and painful task that is project mobilise mommy. Any suggestions on what to get her (I'm thinking ford sport KA or Nissan micra) or comments/ advice on how to go about it all are more than welcome. If not sit back and enjoy various updates and calamities.

Neither proposed option is durable or reliable. K11 Micras were, of course, but K12s are very different. Listen closely and you can probably hear a Ka fizz...
I disagree. I've been trying to kill mine for the past 7 months, managed 16,000 miles, and all that's gone wrong in that time is that the exhaust manifold came loose, i smashed the exhaust heat shielding brackets (I assume, as it's no longer connected to anything at that end and rattles like hell) where it meets the pre-cat, and had a ball joint failure at the front drivers side. Everything has been cured with various hammers, and/or chemical metal and scrap tin.None of these faults were because of the car being crappy, more just lots of bad roads and my driving

I've heard rumors of problematic electrics, but I'm yet to experience any.
Honda Jazz is something I had overlooked. It may be a good shout purely because of the relatively bomb proof nature of the things.
Unfortunately giving her my car is out of the question for several reasons, firstly being she's not a huge fan of it, apparently the wheels are to easy to curb and its "A boys car" and I will be needing it more in the next few months.

Just to confirm, the car looks like a fat hippo
not my one, but looks identical.

Yes, I learned to drive in a K12 micra and it was probably the most user friendly car I've ever driven. Just simple motoring.
Sorry, I was asking [i]chongwong[/] whether his car was a K12. I dont dislike them but I have heard so many bad things, such that you cant dismiss them all.Mostly to do with Renault electrics, onviously...
K11 micra would be the most durable, but possibly a little old?
My Nissan main dealer service manager does not recommend the K12 (or numerous other Nissan's as it goes)
Honda Jazz is mechanically durable but the plastics are a bit gash.
Have you thought about something of a more elevated nature? Woman at work is in the top 1% of s
t drivers and has zero mechanical sympathy. she has a Daihatsu Terios which gets some pretty serious abuse on a daily basis and seems to shrug it off with no ill effects. Plus is easy to drive as you sit up a bit higher and has really good all round vision.
Or a bit left field...a smart? takes away the ability to crunch gears and so forth... basically a Go-kart, but you will need to make sure its got a decent S/H, mega easy to park and drive though and plastic panels forgive a multitude of sins.......

Honda Jazz.
It's Japanese, reliable, chain cam engine, cheap to service (if you do it yourself), masses of interior space, good visibility and has withstood my partner hitting just about everything going, including my own car.

pretty much the default answer to white-goods small cars I'd've thought.

Yaris should be in with a shout too
This is a good shout, i "gave" (sold it her for trade) my mother my 58 plate yaris 1.3 petrol SR when it was a year old and had done 10k, she has punished it for nearly 50k since then and its never skipped a beat....and she is a pretty afwul driver. She spannered a pot hole last month and managed to pop front and back passenger tyres! she blamed the pot hole......
