...are ageing very well IMO.

Personally I couldn't care less about Audi image or the TT being for hairdressers (apparently), I just think the early cars now look nicer than ever.

Take this car. My Mrs would be delighted to have this on the Garlick drive (as would I) and it looks like a great car for the money with simple spec and classic TT colour: http://used.ph/16coMiG

Are they coming of age? Not the purest drivers car, but a nice enough place to be. Coupe might be preferable, but in a similar spec to this cabrio.

Oh, and lets keep 'funny' comments about Audi drivers, Clarksonisms or similar to other existing threads. Thanks.

I had a 2001 TTC 225, and loved it. Likewise more recently a 2008 3.2 TTR.

Far too much internet bullst spread about these cars IMHO. Mostly by people who have not driven one for more than 5 minutes if at all.

yes They went from ground breaking design to common as muck pretty quickly but are now heading for design classic status IMO. Shame they're so average to drive, although that can be fixed AFAIK.

I test drove one for 45 mins, felt far too much like a Golf

I've had 2. A 225 and the Quattro Sport.

Yes they weren't the last word in handling but they were (at least the ones I had were) well put together and had a good turn of pace.

The QS was a great car and one of those cars that I actually regret selling.

I love the styling of them. Some of my neighbours have had TTs and I've quite enjoyed looking at them.

I've not driven one, but all the talk about them being dull to drive puts me off. That said the really early ones had "dangerous" handling didn't they? That sounds more like my kind of thing.

I have to admit, i've looked at the price of Mk1 TTs a few times.

My 4 year old son would be made up if I bought one. The Audi TT is is favourite car, second only to the R8.

Have to agree with you. They drive much better than the equivalent MK4 Golf, and with an extra 75BHP and Haldex 4WD are a much better proposition. I had a MK1 S3 and while it wasn't the last thing in handling it made decent progress with no fuss. Also slipped below the radar somewhat.

Unfortuneatly, a number of TTs and S3 of this age seem to be getting 'Barried' up.

A good original, well maintained example may well become a rarity going forward.

Get one quick, unless he doesn't have legs or you're 5'2" in which case he'll be ok in the back for a while. The coupe has a surprisingly large boot but laughable rear leg room.

Garlick - Test drive one. It may be the most underwhelming experience of your motoring life.

It's a tarted up Golf, and drives like one smile

I preferred the looks of the MK2 to the MK2, the drive, the other way around, but I'd still rather have an early Boxster.

My brother has a Mk1 225. It is very sure footed indeed and corners flatly with a lovely interior.

I would say that the engine isn't very charismatic though.

I'd just use it for A-B motoring though, and I'm sure it's good at that. Quite like Golfs too!

Surely a lot of people would be more than happy with a 225bhp 4WD Golf though?

I don't think anyone bought a TT under the illusion that it was a genuine 'sportscar' TBH.

these are slipping in to a nice price range, I drove a 225 quattro for a week or so a few years ago quite enjoyed it.

I should clarify here - specifically it drives like a MK4 Golf (its based on one). IMO the most underwhelming golf to drive ever .(followed closely by the MK3)

I'm considering one (the 3.2v6) as my next car. Would I have one over a 350z, probably not. But I will take one for a test drive so you never know.

Aerodynamic instability at high speeds. German hoonage on autobahns sent the back end light and resulted in some quite horrendous offs. Car was recalled and a strip of GRP tacked to the boot lid. They looked even better before this mod.

The fact it drives like a Golf is probably why they're so popular. Its a great all weather car. 4WD for snowy stuff, soft top for summer stuff. Bit of umpf to get you along the straights. If you can get past the brand image its a great buy.
