Excellent job description in my opinion. Sounds like something for a senior tech, with REAL customer facing skills, and a love of the product, perhaps wanting to get off the tools, just not through the normal route?
From memory, Agnews are owned by Lookers, need to check though.
Not a job for any old Tom Dick or Harry, and I doubt the customers will be interested in the BMW model codes.
The people that could fill this roll will be few and far between IMO.

All BMW dealers are going to have a genius. It is part of their new direction they are heading, it's taken from the idea that Apple use in their shops, they have product experts, telling you all about the products and not trying to 'sell' to you..
What I wonder is at what point they hand them over to us Salesmen.
Time will tell.

Actually, I don't think the job would be too difficult at all. It would just take the right mentality. As with anything its easy to learn and absorb knowledge of something you have an interest in. Not many customers will be asking really technical questions about how the engine operates, it would more than likely be talking customers through the use of the on board computers/idrive, perhaps demonstrating things like the satnav/multimedia systems, explaining stop/start tech and so on so forth. Ok so there will be some customers asking some difficult questions but when working with just one brands model line up it should not take someone long to learn what you would need to answer any questions you come across. From memory, Agnews are owned by Lookers, need to check though.

GenePool...
As part of my employment, I used to visit BMW dealers regularly, this was on a big SW rollout a few years ago though. I still get involved in the occasional migration, takeover etc.
From past experience, BMW will not make this an easy position to fill, they will demand something over and above a product expert. They are hard taskmasters, but IMO ultimately do buy into their own product.
Now, if more OEM's did the same?

As I have neither worked for BMW or even visited a BMW dealership I am happy to take your word on what BMW may expect from someone in this role however, I can imagine that what they expect would be more than is required though that's no bad thing, better to be over qualified etc.As part of my employment, I used to visit BMW dealers regularly, this was on a big SW rollout a few years ago though. I only say this as I work as customer service helper for a midlands based car supermarket. Our footfall is obviously larger than a franchise dealers would be so I deal with a vast amount of customers which means I get asked all sorts of questions daily. Most are fairly easy to answer and I should imagine a customer in a BMW showroom would be asking similar questions to any of my customers.
I'm by no means saying I could simply jump into the role but I can well imagine what it would realistically involve.
It does make a lot of sense. I've encountered far too many car sales staff who do not know basic things about cars but know more than enough about the finance packages available.
I'm certain customers were far rather deal with someone who can answer all their questions and describe the technical merits of various features in a non pressure way , then once the customer decides they would like to buy a sales person can be called in.

These people will help the odd person who has a proper interest in cars, many of whom would probably know much about what they are buying anyway.
But I`d imagine that most of their time will be spent with normal buyers, baffling them with bulls
t.
Before handing them over to a salesman while their brain is still spinning.

Its about time. I couldn't get in contact with anybody from BMW who could tell me if the 118d, 120d and 123d shared the same engine internals as I was looking to source a replacement engine.
Conversations generally went like this:
Me:I'm looking for some information as I'm trying to source an engine for my 123d. Would a replacement engine from any variation of the n47 engine work?
Them:What do you mean sir?
Me:I'm asking if components such as the block, pistons and cams are identical between all the 2litre diesel engines
Them:*pause* Butterfly's are pretty
Me
It was hopeless, even the head tech at my local BMW dealership couldn't answer my question.
