I have seen a black 944 Porsche a few times which i think is local to me (Bucks) it says ruf on the back.
I had my doubts and have just searched online for info and found nothing, only 911s.
Im asking because i thought it probably was not real and decided to show him a clean pair of heels in my e46 M3, due to the rate it then passed me i assume its genuine!

Is there such a thing?
If so what sort of money do they go for? what is the performance like?

I don't know about the RUF stuff.

Being Turbocharged they are tuneable. There was a rather splendid Red one on PH somewhere that was for sale a couple of years ago.

Some links for you to browse if you so wish:

Post 21 is a response from a US tuning house that talks of a 600HP 944 Turbo.

It seems with various mixing and matching of bell houses and clutches and getting the clutch actuation swapped from a puller to a pusher or vice versa that the 2.7 Twin Turbo Audi V6 can be put in them, with that engine in tuned B5 Audi S4s getting them to >190MPH, there are threads about it here.

Turbos mean big dollops of torque and punchy acceleration?

i havent come across any Ruf 944s either. A stock turbo s or later model turbo has the same 0 60 time as your M3.
they had 250 bhp factory fresh and a couple of hundred quid can add another 30 or so. getting 300 out of them isnt hard at all.

Im not aware ruf ever modified a 944. the car you saw actually started out as a big standard 2.5 to which the owner has fitted a turbo lump. im not sure how much bhp it has but the whole car is heavily modified.

Most 944's you see these days are a bit Ruf around the edges.

Is it me or iz it lowered a bit too much? The front wheels look like its scraping the wheel arches?

So this was the right place to ask!
That is the car, so it is not a ruf version.
Thankyou for the help and link!

It has certainly got me looking in the for sale section..

That isn't a turbo front end so engine transplant if it has a turbo lump. RR thread doesn't show the engine.

There has been an increase of threads whereby e46 M3s are shown up by older cars.

This either means that there is an increase of sleeper cars or e46 drivers are crap.

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... that's just the first, there have been others.

The E46 is fairly heavy and they never seem to make the full 343 bhp, obviously they are still a quick car but something lighter with a healthy modded engine might give it a run for its money, in most sensible situations on the road people will bail as in fast cars the speeds get silly, so from 40 mph to 100 it isnt such a long time to pull any distance, no point anyway, as long as you enjoy what you are driving. I had a little dice with an M3 cab in my Saab 9-3 Aero (250 ish bhp) and it didnt exactly dissapear into the distance, ditto an Escort Cosworth, driver slowed for a chat, was amazed a Saab had kept up.

Thanks for the link to the retrorides thread on it.

Are E46 much faster, accelerative than an E36 M3s, due to the extra weight? Or E36 M3s are getting so old and variable it very much depends on the individual car?

I believe that there was a thread on TIPEC about it. I was quite impressed by the owners ability to work on the car and to make it work.

I presume that the Alois Ruf decals are a play on the Ruf-sounding cherished number (Yellowbird was a CTR remeber).
